I didn't have time to watch the whole 47 minute documentary but I thought you must have watched it to be responding the way you did. Did Harris say that black males couldn't learn somewhere in the film?
I was responding to other posters, and nowhere did I suggest that anyone said black kids couldn't learn. What I did say is that the SUCCESS of a child doesn't depend on their skin color, and I thought starting my response with "As a city educator..." made it clear that I was speaking from my experience. I'm in the middle of taking continuing ed classes, so I don't have the time to watch a movie that long.

What other posters? l didn't see any posters on this thread say that. You were apparently making a straw man argument and sigma and ken agreed with it.

Smokey, stop trying to make everything into an argument. Several posters, including you, were discussing the issue of race in education. I stated that in my experience, a child's success or failure has nothing to do with the color of their skin. How is that a straw man argument? Do you know what that is? It seems like maybe you don't...

You presented an agument against the proposition that black males can't learn. That was a proposition that was never made on this thread. That is the definition of a straw man argument.

I understood perfectly. You jumped on his bandwagon and now you are blaming me for your misunderstanding.

The bigots know who they are. And if I had you in that category, I wouldn't be responding to you, as you would be on my ignore list. My response to BK was related to his statement/comment and notheing else. I haven't watched the documentary, so I'm not responding to its contents.

No I didn't think you meant I was a bigot, the point was that bmoreteacher was arguing a point that was not in dispute. I was puzzled as to where someone had said that black males couldn't learn only to find out that no one said that on this thread or in the referenced article and video.

For about the third time, I didn't say ANYWHERE that someone said black kids can't learn, nor did I say that. I said the secret to success has nothing to do with skin color. Given that this article is about someone accusing Baltimore City Public Schools of failing black kids, I'd say talking about success in schools and skin color is perfectly logical. You, on the other hand, wish to twist my words into something I didn't say. Go back and read, please.

Not sure why you'd be puzzled, given that I didn't say that.

Actually Genghis made it. It's that understanding plain English problem you have rearing it's head again

No he didn't say that at all. Maybe it isn't me that is having a problem understanding plain English.

He said, "The subject again is BLACK people trying to make excuses and blaming anyone but the parents, kids and culture for the failure of BLACK kids (yes theirs a pervasive mentality/culture in the ghetto that getting an education is a white man thing and is selling out)."

He is saying that "black ghetto culture" and the parents are the problem. No where did he say black males cannot learn.

You're joking, right? You've been trying to claim that I said black kids can't learn, yet every time I ask you where I said that, you dodge it. It looks like you're getting tripped up in your own web, dear.

It's your reading comprehension issue, or you just agree with him and are playing dumb. His words speaks volumes to the point of claiming moving a black child from baltimore city to Woodlawn(where there's no ghetto) would make no difference. Of course neither of you have worked in the field so I get it

Are you crazy? I never claimed any such thing. I said you were arguing against the proposition that black males can't learn. My point was that no one made that proposition so you were making a straw man argument.

I never had an issue with what bmore said. The whole point I made was that he was making a straw man argument.

This is really incredible. My whole argument was very simple but none of you supposedly understand what I was saying. I don't think I write that poorly.

Again, people were discussing the ability of black youth to learn. No one said that they couldn't learn, nor did I imply such a thing. I merely said that success has nothing to do with skin color. Not sure why you went nuts about that...

No one said that success had anything to do with skin color and I didn't go "nuts" about anything. You were apparently arguing with ghengisraven who stated that one of the reasons some blacks were failing is the "culture" that they were exposed to. It seems you interpreted culture to mean race.

I'm done with this moronic argument. When people are discussing black culture, clearly they're talking about race. When the thread title says city schools failed the black community, clearly we're talking about race. I wasn't saying anything Earth shattering, but you can't help but to jump down people's throats for the stupidest little things. How insane!
