Default Why is "Rev" Jackson against a new jail?

Jails are for those who are convicted of crimes, right?

Why is Rev Jesse fighting the construction of one? Where does he wish convicted criminals go instead of jail? His house?

The new jail is needed to remove the "youth" offenders from the adult facility.

Is he so naive to think that the elimination of the jail = elimination of crime?

    Clown.

"If you build this jail, and you spend all this money on crime control, you're basically saying that's where every kid in Baltimore is going to end up," said Vernon Crowffey, 18, who said he grew up off Harford Road near The Alameda and was first arrested on gun charges at the age of 10.
No, young Vernon, just those who get arrested on gun charges beginning at age 10. They belong there, lest they grow up and start preying on YOUR family.

Nothing so infuriates a minister named Jones as being called "Reverend Jones." Reverend is an adjective, not a title. If a parson is not a doctor (D.D. or Ph.D.), he is, like other men, a mister.* Last week the Ministerial Association of Lansing, Mich, formally resolved that "in addressing one another, or in referring to one another in speech or in writing, we discard all titles except that of mister." Lansing's reverend misters hoped that their friends and the press would stop infuriating them.

*In good usage "Reverend" is not found with only a last name after it. Incorrect: Reverend Jones....
Note that this appeared in 1939.

I'd like to know why young Vernon was "in and out of jail starting in the seventh grade." If we expect that "every kid in Baltimore is going to end up" in jail, we are not building them big enough.

Just more tip toeing around the real problem which is youth crime. If the jail doesn't get built, crime will go on and people will be complaining about youths getting jailed with adults.

Seems the only way to win is to pretend crime doesn't exist.

He wanted more air time because he is slowly becoming irrelevant to most educated people.

True - but I think what Jesse's saying is that the whining kids who are stuck with the worst of of the worst adults in Baltimore City Detention Center need to shut up.

Rev. Jackson is saying the kids' comfortability in jail doesn't matter. We need to focus on ensuring the next generation doesn't end up in jail rather than wasting time on caring about this lost generation of kids. He's saying they're cooked already, so let's muffle their screams, and move on to hope that things change in the future. Not saying I agree, but I think he genuinely cares about the next generation.

Not necessarily. They are often for people charged with crimes awaiting trial, but who have no bail or are unable to make bail.

Just out of curiosity, why does anyone care what he thinks?

Because he is here in Baltimore. Normally he is just an irrelevant clown, but when he's here sticking his nose into local issues (usually just looking for a handout, a payoff, a "donation or honorarium - just synonyms for shake down of local business and/or politicians with threats of "marches" or other forms of protest designed to ensure he gets paid) I pay attention, as he has many sheep-like followers who actually think he has their best interests in mind.

"This is another attack on Baltimore City, and we cannot allow them to keep attacking us," she said. "We have to stand together and say, 'No you won't, Maryland.' "

How about, "no you won't baby mommas and baby daddies" ? Thats the root of the problem. The jail is a response, not a cause to the problems.

How about standing together and saying, "no you won't, people that keep having kids you're not able to care for emotionally and financially"

How about focusing on the very uncomfortable realities that make such a facility a necessity?

Time is passing on and passing the, Ole Revund by so he is trying to stay relevant. Sadly as usual he is on the wrong side of this issue. Just wish the Mayor would have the courage to tell him to foff and go back home.

State Sen. Verna Jones-Rodwell urged those at the event to push their elected officials to stop the jail from being built, characterizing it as a state-versus-city fight.

"This is another attack on Baltimore City, and we cannot allow them to keep attacking us," she said. "We have to stand together and say, 'No you won't, Maryland.' "
Why do I get the feeling that Jones-Rodwell and the rest of the enablers are making this an issue about race, and not a "state-versus-city fight"?
