Default Oilman Named Archbishop of Canterbury??

    Huh?

Welby, appointed last year as bishop of Durham in northeastern England, worked for 11 years in the oil industry, rising to treasurer of Enterprise Oil before deciding he was called to the priesthood.
Can a hedge fund manager named pope be far behind?

The man was called to the priesthood after the death of his daughter in a car accident in 1997.

Matthew was a tax collector before he was called to be an apostle.

That I don't know. He was a bishop for a year. I haven't read anything about the selection process. Sometimes it comes down to someone the others will vote for.

I particpated in the convention that selected the current Episcopal Bishop of Delaware. There were several names for consideration. As we voted, people dropped out. It came down to two men, one a Delaware priest and one a priest from Lousiana. Vote after vote was cast, and it was clear one had the majority vote but not the number required for confirmation. Finally the local priest dropped out and Wayne Wright was selected. He's served well.

Some of us still like to believe the Holy Spirit has some influence in these matters.

You may be on to something:

What's weird is that the bookmakers say people who never placed bets before opened accounts to do so, convinced that Welby would be the one. That, of course, has led to speculation that church insiders were trying to cash in, notes the BBC
