NBC: David Petraeus resigns from CIA
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...n-nbc/1695271/
3:02PM EST November 9. 2012 - NBC reported Friday that CIA director David Petraeus has resigned from the CIA, citing an extramarital affair.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell said the resignation was submitted in a letter dated Friday and was accepted by the White House.

In a letter, Petraeus noted that he had been married for 37 years and had exercised "extremely poor judgment' in conducting an extramarital affair.
People resign from the CIA over an affair? Since when?

He's not an elected official on a family values platform, who cares if a CIA guy has an affair? Whoopty-do.

It could be perceived as a security issue. If the wrong people have the information, who's a better target for blackmail than the Director of the CIA?

    This.

He may have begun to get the blackmail threats and decided to get out in front.

Sorry to hear this. He seemed like an experienced and capable man for that job.

Interesting timing, though... 3 days after the election and all. I don't suppose he was told to keep this under his hat until now?

His honor may have become a little tarnished. But this shows that his professional integrity is still intact. This was the right thing to do under the circumstances.

Or he decided to keep it quiet til after the election out of loyalty to his CIC. Imagine that......

But once disclosed, it becomes a non-blackmailable issue.

Well in point the fact, the person most directly affected by this is Mrs P. I imagine she had some say in this.

I'm disappointed. I hate to see him go. He is a smart man and most ways. However, people are frail in many ways. Unfortunately, the temptation was to much to resist. Sad!

An affair... hardly a reason to resign following disclosure of the same.

Perhaps some upcoming testimony under oath (such as that which will happen next week)...

That would be the more plausible explanation. This + the drilling policy.

What other surprises are out there now that the election is over. I'm not even going to try and turn cynic mode off.

Nobody is disclosing as yet, who the person was with whom he was having said affair. If it was someone within the CIA, it would be, because of his position, a subordinate, and if so he would have no other option than to resign.

He actually didn't resign outright, he went to the President yesterday and offered his resignation and the President slept on the offer overnight before calling him back in today to accept his resignation.

Interesting development, just two weeks before General Petraeus was due to testify in front of Congress over the Benghazi debacle.
