Maurice James, of Salisbury, was convicted in Autust of attempted first-degree rape, third-degree sex offense, reckless endangerment and false imprisonment. The victim was assaulted while walking across the SU campus in the early morning hours of March 31 toward a friend's apartment in Sea Gull Square.
During the trial she testified she felt someone grab her and after she screamed, he put his hand over her mouth. They fought on the ground and he pulled her shirt down, pulled her skirt up and pulled her underwear off, she said.
She said after fighting a little more, he left and then she bent over to get her phone, but unexpectedly, he was there again behind her. She said he then flipped her over on her stomach and wouldn't let her go, but she was able to prevent herself from being raped by fighting back.
