    Default Respect for our Flag

I removed my post for Veterans and placed it elsewhere after learning theresearcher has a upside down U.S. flag as a avatar. Most military people know when to use the flag upside down and I don't believe that is the case here. As a veteran I hold the U.S flag sacred and will not condone it being abused this way.

The extreme right hangs the U.S. flag upside down out of disrespect for President Obama.

    §176. Respect for flag:
    (a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

I'm sure all the vets would be pleased with your dishonoring of their flag.

I'd like to see him in a private room discussing it with the vets... actually, I'd pay good money for a seat.

If they respected freedom of speech (one of those purported ideals on which the country was founded)...

    Speaking of dishonoring their flag...

Merely a symbolic emblem based on the US flag, at least it is the right way up, hardly disrespectful.

So you think vets would be pleased with the upside down flag avatar? Gee that's hard to imagine. Has nothing to do with honoring freedom of speech. I can honor freedom of speech and not be real pleased with Nazis parading in my local V Day parade.

Pleased or unpleased would depend on the vet. One would hope that they would honor the purported ideals upon which this country was founded.

No comment on the Obama campaign's desecration and dishonoring of the flag by turning it into a Pepsi logo prop?

We can save Bill Ayers' curbstomping of the flag (showing it much honor and respect) for a later discussion.

I am not up to speed on what is considered desecration (which I am pretty sure this isn't just from the basic meaning of the word) or dishonoring If the Obama graphic is, then shame on them.

What does what this clown does with his avatar have to do with Bill Ayers? Does his behavior somehow give licence to any bad behavior toward the flag? How does that function work exactly? Is there an equation that could perhaps illustrate this?

It actually goes to selective 'outrage' on the part of some (defending the ideal of free speech v. defending only speech that they agree with) coupled with the schizophrenic nationalism/jingoism v. internationalism of the same. Have they not heard of Omar's intellectually bankrupt so-called 'political spectrum?'

Defending the ideal of free speech necessarily means defending speech with which you agree and with which you don't. Giving voice to disagreement is hardly abridging free speech--suggesting such a thing is starting to go down the very path you purport to defend.

Consistency while the hobgobbin of small minds is nonetheless usually a good thing.

Seems like some things seldom change.

Ever notice how the people who beat the drums of war the loudest, are usually those who do not serve, nor want their loved ones to serve.

Indeed on the emphasized. There has been a bit more than giving voice to disagreement in regard to the subject specific issue.

Consistency is an excellent 'thing.' Such is why it so much fun to pillory the positions of the schizophrenic.
