Default A Decade of War Is Ending

Of the many memorable lines in President Obama’s eloquent victory speech on Tuesday, the Chicago crowd reserved some of its greatest applause not for the line trumpeting the economy’s ongoing recovery, but for the news that “a decade of war” was coming to an end.

Tuesday’s speech was not the first time the President has made such a statement. But he has taken care to avoid saying which war, exactly, he meant was at an end. Certainly he includes the war in Iraq as among the endings. Likewise nearing an end from the President’s perspective is the war in Afghanistan, with U.S. troops set to leave by 2014.

What about the worldwide “war” against Al Qaeda and associated forces? The war two Presidents, Congress and the courts have all now found in some sense to exist? While U.S. operations in, for example, Yemen, continue apace, and the brand name “Al Qaeda” remains in active use, public reporting suggests there is less and less left of a command structure behind the Al Qaeda organization actually responsible for attacking the United States in 2001. Whether that war counts among the endings the President had in mind is less clear.

I thought it was interesting that he mentioned global warming, a topic that was essentially ignored for the entire campaign.

A decade of war is ending? This is America and war for us never really ends. We seem to need to be at war with something or someone; and it will only be a short matter of time before we've again got our military forces bombing somebody somewhere, either overtly or covertly, for some vague reason.

It's cynical, but that's sure the way we appear to prefer things.

You had a flashback of Bush on the naval ship under a banner saying mission accomplished I take it.

There is no difference between Obushma on foreign policy and the 'war' will continue, unabated. Such is the nature of US foreign policy, whether conducted under the facade of democracy spreading, R2P, or something else. For example, ending the 'war' in Iraq? Nope. The Iraqis unceremoniously tossed Obushma out (of course AQI is back on the rise). Ending the 'war' in Afghanistan? Nope. The corrupt and illegitimate central Afghan government is nowhere near ready nor will be ready to stand on its own two feet by 2014. Watch for the relabeling of US combat forces as 'trainers,' 'counterinsurgents' and 'counter terrorism forces.' The drone 'war' has been expanded and will continue to be expanded. The 'war' in Africa is being expanded at this very moment and the bungling short-sighted foolishness of the current administration in regards to 'democracy' with the Islamist Spring (just as with the Carter/Ray Gun idiocy of supporting the mujahideen) will continue to pay 'dividends' for 'war' for decades to come.

Of course, one can't forget the current regime's anti-Iranian racism and bigotry of 'red lining' or the anti-Chinese racist warmongering that will be coming when China evicts the US from its sphere of influence.

The two overseas wars are over but the American class warfare is just beginning.
