Default Balto City Spends $200K for Inner Harbor Statue of "Du" Burns

    According to The Sun: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-...,2365079.story

The William Donald Schaefer statue at the Inner Harbor is bad enough-- now they're planning one for one-time Mayor "Du" Burns near the Science Center. Talk about small-time politicians! And the City's contributing $200K to the funding, and the State, $100K. If Du Burns admirers want to memorialize the man they should come up with the money through private sources.

Just keep junking up the Inner Harbor...

"Du" Burns was mayor by default for a whopping 11 months. Who's in line next for a statue, "Steala" Dixon? Burns' record doesn't hold a candle to the accomplishments of William Donald Schaefer. What did Burns do except work with the neighborhoods?

And yes, Schaefer's statue absolutely belongs at the Inner Harbor since he's the man responsible for getting it and a lot of other things done.

$200K sounds like the City Council's daily breakfast budget.

    Why complain about a statue?

Yes. First black mayor of Baltimore.

Of course first black anythings are celebrated in this country due to its history of racism and oppression.

I can only imagine the conniptions in about 20 years or so when Barack Obama starts getting statues and the like...

Obama was elected president twice ,it doesn't matter if you did or didn't vote for him, (I didn't) He deserves the respect of the office. Du was never elected mayor.

I did think it a bit premature to name some schools after him before he was even inaugurated.

Burns was elected citywide to the office of city council president. (He was an incumbent by virtue of being elected by his fellow council members as the first black city council president after Walter Orlinksy resigned.)

Good grief. Like getting an award for finishing 8th in an eight man race. Oh well, the pigeons will have another place to poop.

Sorry to bust any bubbles (not) but Dumb Burns was only the first black mayor of baltimore because the mayor of part of baltimore city (Schaefer') the rich, ____ part moved on to the Gov's mansion. Kurt Schmoke was the first elected black mayor of baltimore, a position more legitimate that that of a follow on act.

    20 years?

Ain't no way he goes out of office before the first statue goes up.

...and Christopher Columbus was the first WHITE man to set foot on this continent. Where's the statue for him? Neil Armstrong was the first WHITE man to set foot on the moon. Where's his statue? Where's the statues for all the white people from Baltimore who were first in anything?

And Sheila Dixon was the first black female mayor. We better not see a statue for her corrupt arse anytime soon.

When did the city become so flush with cash?

It's all good though. When the city runs out of money again, they'll just raise income taxes again since no one cared the last time.
