It's true that you never can tell. I remember a few years ago when the Steelers came into Baltimore with Roethlisberger on the bench with a concussion and started Dennis Dixon. That game spread went from like 3 to 9. It should have been an easy game for the Ravens. As I recall, it went to overtime before they won. And that Raven's defense was much better than this years version. So, yeah, you never know when division rivals get together. It will be interesting to see what the oddsmakers do with this if Roethlisberger is ruled out. The opening line was Pittsburgh - 4 1/2.

Mike Tomlin's quote today says it best.
    ================

"We're not looking to make excuses. Excuses are the tools of the incompetent."

You are engaging in whining about a fan reaction to a game that has yet to be played. Slow it down a little.

here's the latest from ESPN http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/86...-a-source-says

he's not playing this Sunday and probably not for a few more Sundays....just reading the description of the injury is painful.....

Dk-- Tomlin has the right attitude and so do you...don't mind lets go, he's a special a gift to this board....ask him what he thought of Kyle Boller (if you dare)......

    1. Usually, all of the Ravens-Steelers matchups are good. And those around the league know it.
    2. I definitely remember a LOT of flack from Steelers fans after that game, driving home the point that the Ravens were weak because it took them overtime to beat a team being QB'd by Dixon, a rookie. (I think Batch was hurt at the time.)

I'm just tired of the Roethlisberger over-embellishment story every time he gets hurt. My little brother is a huge Steelers fan and he, too, is tired of it.

Many players get hurt, but keep it to themselves; many play with pain every game - the difference being they do it quietly like grown men and they don't make their injuries sound bigger than they are. But I don't blame Roethlisberger completely. The media play it up quite nicely. Instead of watching a football game on Sunday Night, it will now be the Big Ben Story, part 72.

This time I could have sworn I read they were close to amputating his arm, and miraculously he got better.

And of course no one has heard a word from Ben on this injury but every reporter who is anything close to the NFL has made it a feature story.

I agree that this last episode has been almost entirely media driven. I'll also admit I have a bias against Roethlisberger (for me, the well has been poisoned with the previous embellishments). With that said, we shall see what transpires from this point on...there still is not enough information on the extent of the injury - only what happened in the past. Only Roethlisberger and the Steelers know the real deal.

"[Roethlisberger] has a shoulder sprain [that] can be classified as an SC sprain,'' Tomlin said. "That's all the information that I have for you at this time. He's being evaluated. Obviously, this injury puts his participation in the questionable category this week.''

An SC joint sprain, basically, is a tear in the joint that connects the sternum to the clavicle. It controls the movement in that area, so range of motion will be an issue for Roethlisberger. Surgery generally isn't needed for this injury, which would be treated with rest and pain meds. Even a less serious form of an SC joint sprain could take at least three weeks to heal.

Apparently it's the same injury that stopped Favre's consecutive games streak. The sports medicine doc on 105.7 this morning said he'll be shocked if Ben plays with that injury.

If the Steelers are as good as many national pundants claim they are, they should have little trouble defeating the highly injured Ravens on their home turf, even without Big Ben. The fact that the Ravens are playing with key injuries to their defense should help them out immensely. Also, who knows what can happen? Heaven forbid, Flacco could get hurt like Carson Palmer did on the first play of the game a few years back on a dirty hit.

I also recall the game when I was a youngster where Unitas and his backup were both out for the season and the Baltimore Colts had to play the Lombardi Packers in 65 (eventual first superbowl winner) in a playoff game and had Tom Matte as QB versus Bart Starr. Guess what? Starr got knocked out on first play of game and the odds got a little better with Zeke Bartowski (sic) playing and the Colts should have won it in regulation 10-7 if not for a blown call on the tying FG by a Zebra. So the Steelers I believe as their coach Tomlin states, will we well prepared and confident of winning regardless of who is behind center and have a great chance of winning this game and perhaps handily.

I'm still not convinced. Note that it says, "Leftwich will start." It does not say Ben will not play. I'll believe it when I see it.

I was skeptical until I heard the doctor on the radio this morning. The risk to make it an even worse injury is high if he plays. The Steelers still have too much season to go to risk that

he's not playing this week or for the next couple of weeks...

the Ravens have won their last two trips into Pittsburgh and if memory serves me correctly, Ben was playing last year...

another interesting note...despite being labeled as a poor road team, the Ravens road record under Harbaugh against the AFNC is 9-4...with 2 losses at Pitts and 2 at Cincinnati....Their last AFN road loss was the 2nd game of 2010 against Cincinnati...

I hope you didn't bet the farm on it. Feel like a fool often?
