I know Ben has had his share of 'indiscretions', but it looks like he has turned himself around somewhat, what with being married and a kid on the way, and he was having a good season. I wish Ben 'the football player' a speedy and full recovery.
I don't wish a player injury or gloat about one regardless of how I feel about the team. It's called sportsmanship.
Ben was never charged with anything, keep that in mind. The first story seemed to fall apart thanks to information from a friend of the accuser. The second one might have been messier, but the accuser never chose to pursue it further (for her own reasons which may or may not be worth discussion) so regardless of what we might read in to it... at the end there was basically no real story.
My big gut feeling here is that Ben probably didn't do anything illegal, but probably WAS a complete and royal rear-hole for a long time in the way he carried himself and treated other people. Maybe the second incident never becomes anything if the first person hadn't put a story out there. He probably had a bit of a God complex going on, having been worshipped by those around him through high school and college, had great success early in the pros, and likely never suffered consequences for the stupid / unethical things he did.
Hopefully the lack of bad stories about him off the field since then, the marriage, the pending fatherhood, etc... are all signs that he's "grown up" and become a better person. Maybe somebody / something finally got through to him and he realized that he needed to improve himself. Maybe later in life than MOST people do, but it can happen.
I actually had a bit of a minor (VERY minor, but still unpleasant) incident in one of the elevator waiting areas at a Ravens game back in '98 or '99. Some "words" were said and there might have been some unnecessary bumping.Afterwards one of the usher / security types told me that the guys were guests of Ray Lewis, and they were jerks every week. Who knows if either / both of them were the same guys who wound up in court in Atlanta, I honestly couldn't remember the faces well enough to know either way. But the stories are rampant that he was letting in anybody and everybody to his "inner circle" in the early years... and after 2000 completely changed his social life / associations.
And as an example of the opposite...I saw in the news the other day that that P.O.S. Jeremy Stevens was caught up in yet another mess involving a woman -- Hope Solo, the Olympic soccer goal tender to whom he's engaged. (She must be a real piece of work as well; engaged to that dirtball after 2 months). He was, is, and barring some miracle always will be a P.O.S. So some guys never change, while others do.
I don't like Ben at all but i would never wish a fatal injury on him or anyone. He's a human being just like any of us and it's only a game
Some might say they'd prefer to beat them at their 'best'. I say I'd just like to beat the 22 they line up on Sunday.
Feel badly for his wife. She will have new baby shortly and a husband nursing a couple injuries. Imagine she can afford help though.....
