Default Israel's Iron Dome - it works!

    More or less, it works.

    link
Each missile fired from an Iron Dome unit costs around $40,000, but the cost appears to be offset by effectiveness. The Israel Defense Force has previously stated that as many as 85 percent of the enemy rockets can be intercepted. However, the current bombardment is more intense than previous situations when the Iron Dome was in use, and in one instance, the effectiveness reported by Israel was closer to 75 percent.
Not too damn bad. The link has a bit more detailed info on how the system works.

It sucks to holy heaven to have to have such a thing... imagine if Mexico were firing rockets into Texas!?

If I got $3,000,000,000 a year I could come up with an iron dome too!

If you got $3,000,000,000 a year, you'd probably move to somewhere that you were more welcome and people didn't want to fire rockets at you.

Actually it's more like The Iron Seive. In the latest skirimish with Gaza. Israel has said that Iron dome intercepted 130 rockets. 300 rockets were fired that day. That's a lil over 1/3 success rate. The next day 20 rockets were intercepted 80 rocket were fired. That's a 1/4 success rate. There has been a degeneration of the success rate.

This is caused by the internal clock. For Iron Dome to work they have to have a clock that keeps perfect time. It has to be more accurate than an Atomic Clock. That clock does not exist. The calculations made by the computers are in the hundreth, thousandth and millionth of a second range. This is where time keeping becomes very unstable. So if the internal clock is off by one millionth of a second. The computer calculations will be wrong resulting in a miss. Then you also have the natural tendency of any clock to experience time lag. That's what causes a 1/3 success rate to deteriorate to a 1/4 success rate.

The Iron Seive is performing exactly the way I thought it would. This is old US technology that was abandoned as unworkable. Apparently the Israeli's couldn't get it work either.

That's disturbingly similar to the rationale used by scumbags who burn crosses on the lawns of people they want to move somewhere else.

Wow. Totally 100% wrong. The success rate you say is low is because not every rocket fired is targeted. The system is strategically protecting certain areas and only those areas. It also is smart enough not to intercept a rocket that is determined to be so off course that it is of no harm to the protected area. The iron dome is actually performing even better than the Israeli's expected. So much so that other nations want to buy it. The only issue right now is that they need to implement more of it. As the article says, it is a game changer. Face it, Israel wouldn't be wasting it's money developing and implementing more if it were a failure!

Iron Dome is being credited with protecting Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities by blocking some of the rockets fired from Gaza. Over the past three days, 737 rockets from Gaza were fired upon Israel: 492 landed, but 245 were intercepted by the system, Israel Defense Forces said Saturday.

Israel has deployed five Iron Dome batteries, but in March, a defense ministry official told CNN that Israel would need up to 13 batteries to cover all its borders. Israel plans to deploy a total of nine batteries by 2013, Israeli media reported.
"Eliminating the ability to hit strategic targets may lead Hamas to rethink the efficiency of acquiring the rockets it has used in the past," former Israeli ambassador to the United States Dore Gold said in March.

Other countries have expressed interest buying the system, including the United States, South Korea and several NATO countries in Europe with military forces in Afghanistan, the Jerusalem Post reported in March.

3 dead and a dozen or so injured. The rockets are getting past the Iron Seive and hitting civilian targets. If it was as affective as they say it is there would be no need for the degree of retaliation Israel has taken. I would have more faith in their claims if Israel weren't infamous propagandists. I think it's mostly bluff. Btw, the money being wasted on developing and implimenting it is OURS.

The dead and injured are results of rockets that are hitting area's that are not protected by the defense system. There is no defense system that can protect an entire nation, not even one as small as Israel. The system is still in it's infancy stages but has already shot down rockets that were headed towards areas that were deemed to be critical by Israel. Any nation would retaliate when faced with rocket attacks infiltrating it's borders. Israel has more than enough weapons to retaliate and of course would do so as punishment towards it's agressors. The new defense system called the "Iron Dome" has performed above it's expectations so far as a shield that can destroy incoming missles in a small protected area. Other nations, including the US, have taken notice and are already considering how it could be deployed to help them. It is no doubt an expansion on the Patriot missle battery idea that was used in the first gulf war. In time, it will be improved and copied just like the US drone program has been. But for now, it has already paid dividends back. Hamas has fired nearly 1000 rockets into Israel with no damage to any sensitive military or government targets. Meanwhile, Israel has protected it's critical targets, and destroyed many of Hamas critical targets in Gaza. Really, who has been wasting more of their time and money?

As well, it has protected critical targets like the Israeli people's living rooms, lives and well-being. I'm sure the Israeli people love the Dome.

I have a lot of sympathy for the plight of people in Israel and Gaza. I would not want to have to submit to an airport TSA-type search every time I went to work, nor would I want to be the people that felt it had to do that to someone to be safe.

I'm not saying that it won't intercept rockets. Even if it take out 3 out 10. That's far better than all 10 hitting. But I'm just not seeing a 75% success rate. You also have to keep in mind that these "rockets" are little more than over glorified fireworks. They're made in basements and have no guidance systems. They might even be able to cause more damage by using actual fireworks. Let them bomb Iran and we'll see how it holds up against some real military hardware instead of something cobbled together by the Palastinian equivalent of the Boy Scouts.

    Egypt brokers truce?

Palestinian militants held fire overnight on Thursday and Israel refrained from air strikes as an informal truce brokered by Egypt appeared to take hold following two days of violence along the Israel-Gaza border.

Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi said in Cairo as his security deputies sought to broker a truce with Hamas leaders, that "there are some indications that there is a possibility of a ceasefire soon, but we do not yet have firm guarantees."
Of course... the other issue is whether or not the current action is planning for something bigger... red lines and legitimate nuclear weapons.

Hamas is providing the Israelis and the world a demonstration that they are the dominant Palestinian authority figure now and not the corrupt discredited Palestinian Authority. Abbas is irrelevant in case there is anyone left out there who hasn't gotten the memo. Hamas is also demonstrating that our drone technology ironically enough could prove to be Israel's final undoing now that Tel Aviv is within range of their rockets.

At some point these two have to talk.
