There is no reason to feel guilty about white privilege.

It was meant to be stupid to show the stupidity of reparations and apologies for something that other people did in the past.

I could be wrong, but I got the impression she understood that. I mean it's pretty obvious, and SL is a pretty sharp lady...

You are probably right, I just misunderstood the response.

Reparations are unnecessary, messy, and complicated to implement. I see no such problem with an apology from the legal entity that practiced discrimination, although let's leave it at that, an apology.

Matt, I agree with you. I actually helped my husband write a paper arguing against reparations. The apology does no harm, costs no money and makes some people feel better.

Thanks. Boards and councils are constantly passing resolutions congratulating Mary Jones on her 80th birthday or thanking the Boy Scouts for cleaning up a park. Meaningless but they make some people feel good.

The State of Maryland being a former slave state should give every black person now living in the state 40 acres and a truck (a modern version of a mule). That would mean the state would give 6,993,940 acres out of the 7,949,480 acres in the state or 87.9% of the area of the state up for reparations . The land would have to be confiscated from white landowners since their ancestors or people who looked like their ancestors owned slaves and that would only be fair. Lets say the average cost for a pickup truck is $40 K then the state would also have to come up with $69 billion to pay for one for every black person in the state.

    How does that sound?

Do I get to choose the options for the truck?

My husband just told me he needs a new truck. Maybe I should be in favor of reparations JK!

Yes. She did, it is, and she is a sharp lady.

Thank goodness for the grinning emoticon and the added "JK" you used. Without it ~ I can easily see how a even an obvious joking comment would set off even more unnecessary drama over something like an apology in some quarters.

It went over his head, and his lame excuse "I just misunderstood the response."
