Default Big rise in Americans with diabetes, especially in South

Note: Maryland has seen a 102 percent increase in cases of diabetes.

"A breakdown of U.S. diabetes cases shows dramatic increases in the number of people diagnosed with diabetes overall between 1995 and 2010, with especially sharp increases among people in the South and in Appalachian states."

"States with the largest increases over the 16-year period were Oklahoma, up 226 percent; Kentucky, up 158 percent; Georgia, up 145 percent; Alabama, up 140 percent, Washington, up 135 percent, and West Virginia, up 131 percent, according to the study published in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report."

Not sure if Oklahoma is south or not (I think of it as west) but for whatever reasons seems race is a bigger variable.

    http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-bas...es-statistics/

Race and ethnic differences in prevalence of diagnosed diabetes

After adjusting for population age differences, 2007-2009 national survey data for people diagnosed with diabetes, aged 20 years or older include the following prevalence by race/ethnicity:

    7.1% of non-Hispanic whites
    8.4% of Asian Americans
    12.6% of non-Hispanic blacks
    11.8% of Hispanics

I guess some like bad food more than others and without doubt it's hereditary.

It's Sweet Tea. 2 cups of sugar in one glass of tea is too much. When they say this is enough to give you diabetes they aren't kiding.

Gotta admit though, sweet tea and BBQ is good stuff in Georgia. Taste wise anyway.

In the study they mention the increase could be from improved survival rates of persons with diabetes. They also mention changes in diagnostic criteria, aging of population, obesity, sedentary lifestyle and ethnicity.

Note: link to the study below
