Did you know we had two recent racial events on campus, where a noose was strung up on a tree near a black frat? Do I blame the students (as a whole) like you seem to do with the PSU scandal? Get real.

That noose? That was a freaking rope in a tree. Not a noose.

    That is a noose.

90% of the reported racial incidents these days are faked by the "victim", just overblown arguments, or nothing at all.

And not everyone is a fit for military. I can afford it for my family. They will have their choice. But for many kids Mom and Dad can't swing $20K plus a year.
If the end game is getting a job, building a career, then that's a small sacrifice. As it is, many kids don't live on campus. They commute...so they don't experience the college life.

I sent my kids to schools where the University IS the center of all cultural, educational and entertainment experience. You don't get that at UMCP. Come 5pm, many leave and go back to their home, etc.

The Regents vote on Monday with regards to move to the big ten.

I thought that this issue was nothing more than a ploy to try and get more funding for the Athetic Dept - either from donors, or the state. I'm not convinced the interest is genuine.

Is this a serious comment? Most of the people I know were looking to move out of the dorms after freshman year. I would never trade that experience for anything, but 4 years?!?! Never! Nor could my parents have afforded it for that long either (well maybe they could have, but I doubt they WOULD have).

I also know a lot of people who did the CC transfer thing and it worked out great. They saved a lot of money, ended up hanging with the same group of people I did, just went to a different school for a couple of years.

It's stupid that we are even discussing this anyway, as really it has nothing to do with the issue at hand. All of the schools being discussed are great academically, with some being better than others in various areas. It really doesn't matter.

I saw the pictures and read the articles in the Terrapin. It was a noose. There were several rally's after this happened. The fact of the matter is - there are a lot of pg county thugs that prey on students. As far as campuses go, UMCP and surrounding area is not safe. That has fostered some contempt/resentment and hate of minorities....

Not trying to paint Md in a bad light, but when you talk about thuggery at OSU, or the scandal at PSU....ya just better make sure your house is clean before pointing fingers. Personally, I care more about the behavior of the students, than I do players on the football team. I was mortified a few years back by all the bad behavior (and bad press), and obscene chants at Terp basketball games. It got so bad, GW had to talk to the fans before the games...and the Admin formed a commission to address this issue. I worry more about stuff like this.

The students, and their behavior is a reflection of the faculty. After all, the students are the University's "product".

Yeah, I really meant the four year college experience.
I like two years in dorms and two in either off campus or on campus apartments.

    Watch 60 Minutes...now.

You will see how important college ball is to the university.

It most assuredly wasn't an noose, nor was it near a "black frat". In fact, there are no black frat houses on campus. The rope in the tree was so high up that most believe it could have been up there for years. It didn't need to be cut down, it crumbled from rot. Most agree that it was left over from work done on the student union years before when work was being done on the roof. But all are welcome to advance an agenda that some racist left a noose some 30 feet up in a tree may do so. Rumor has it, incidentally and on topic, that Plank pulled a significant amount of money to assist UM leaving the ACC.

Someone that works at UMCP would know the campus paper is the Diamondback. And that single event was close to five years ago and not a "recent" incident.

While you are calling others uninformed, perhaps you could tell us how many kids live on campus? How about those living in frat houses around campus and in Old Town? How about those that filled two massive apartment campuses at the front door of the campus and several more that are a stones throw away. Clearly there are a significant number of students living both on campus and with a few minutes walk. You should know, given the wealth of knowledge you've accrued working there.

January 8, 2009 on the first incident..

    More recently, we have this:

Anti-Semitic vandalism found on University of Maryland campus
    By Maggie Fazeli Fard
Campus police at the University of Maryland are investigating two possible hate crimes, anti-Semitic graffiti and a noose that was found hanging in an under renovation, school officials said.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Wallace Loh, the university president, sent an e-mail to students and staff Wednesday about the incidents on the College Park campus. The e-mail said the school was investigating “two incidents of bias and hate.”

Good for you. We have that option available. Didn't your kids attend Big Ten School?

I see the exodus of students every day @5pm.

As to exact numbers, here's a good start: http://www.chacha.com/question/how-m...d-college-park

How many students live on campus of the university of Maryland college park?

There are 26,431 students at the University of MD, College Park. 33% live on campus. That means there are about 8722 on campus.

Until the past to years, the university had a temendous shortage of dorm space for underclassmen.

    Anything else, wise guy?

Guess the media would differ. Guess the black students on campus, would differ. FBI?

But whatever you want to believe is OK by me.

But the picture from the ABC article I linked looks like a noose, and that's what they called it. In fact, they even called it a noose in the title of the article.

AGAIN, NOT TRYING TO PAINT MD IN A BAD LIGHT....BUT YOU OPENED UP THIS CAN OF WORMS, NOT ME. I THINK MD IS A GREAT SCHOOL. LET ME BE CLEAR...A GREAT SCHOOL. BUT LIKE EVERY SCHOOL, IT HAS IT's ISSUES AND PROBLEMS.
