    Default Trade Thought - O's/Marlins

This, to me, would make a lot of sense for the O's and for the Marlins.
The O's offer Schoop/Gausman/Hunter/another pitcher (Matusz/Patton?) for Stanton.
To me, you meet needs of both teams.
The Marlins get pitching that they can put on the field immediately with bullpen and starting experience, pitching they can look forward to as the top 5 pick with excellent projection, and a guy that's a step away from the majors and projects at 3 IF positions.
The O's get a bat that takes them from questionable contender to serious contender while using that strength to make them better.
I'm not crazy about trading away top prospects, but Stanton's age and ridiculous power makes him an excellent fit for the O's.

I'm sure that Stanton would love to get out of there at this point, but the marlins have said that they are definately not trading him.

You think they would take that package?

    Stanton is a beast...this much I know, but isn't he a bit of a glass boy ? Am I remembering correctly ?

    Giving up Gausman ??????

but you do have to give something for something

We're talking about arguably one of the best players in baseball - it's too early to tell about the glass comment.
According to fangraphs, he's still a +9.3 fielder, along with a top hitter.
He strikes out a lot, but you can't argue with 37 homers in 123 games - and he still gets on base at a .350-.360 clip.
If he stays healthy, he's an MVP candidate next season.

    No.

Stanton is one of the elite young players in the game, a proven MLB star at 22.

Think about Trout or Harper. Do you think the Angels or Nats would part with either of them for that package ?

No, but the Nats and the Angels are trying to build a winner and see those two as cornerstones for the next 10-15 years.
The Marlins are in a fire sale, and they don't have anyone to play around Stanton, except for Morrison (who they are also bailing on.)

sound thinking, but the Marlins aren't known for being shrewd trade partners. I heard a breakdown of their 1998 firesale. essentially, all they got in return for trading their whole team, was Derrek Lee and AJ Burnett.

look at the package they got for Miguel Cabrera. it's a "where are they now" list.

    They're bailing on Morrison ? I hadn't heard that.

It's all about $$$ to them, and Stanton is still cheap.

The difference there, I think, is that Miggy was already expensive while Stanton is still making minimum wage.

If they got rid of Stanton right now for the proverbial bucket of balls, even Loria's friend and protector (Selig) would have a hard time defending the move.

Folks always purpose these trade scenarios listing the top five prospects for a young star player.
Then when the deal is done its for 3 fringe prospects.

So I propose that we deal Brian Matusz and 2 single A players for Stanton.

I do not believe you can trade Glausman, not until a year after you draft
a player, correct me if I am wrong

the strangething is that Morrison and Stanton have the same service time, earn the same money, are arb & FA eligible at the same time, and are basically under team control forthe same length of time.

    yet they are moving Morrison.

You hit the nail on the head, people underestimate the value of potential. If they were really interested in making that type of deal they would have made it last year for Chase Headley. I doubt the Orioles would give up Schoop and Gausman it would be an either or deal than “pick one” (Hunter/Patton) and “pick one” (Hoes/Avery) type deal. However, I have a feeling they have big plans for Schoop in 2013, if he has a solid spring I think he’ll be starting at 3rd or 2nd with Hardy get traded.

He had some perceived behavioral issues.
I think that had a lot to do with it.

as an aside, I heard Schoop doesn't project as being that good of a player. he's seen as a bench player.

The Chase Headley trade situation was pretty hush-hush. for all the talks SD had about him, not too much specific info was really released.

no one will get him now, without opening up the stable doors and saying "take who you want". with his power numbers in Petco park, he would be a masher in OPACY.

I've heard, quick bat, plus power and agile in the field. With Andino gone I think he'll get a shot at 2nd.

Sorry Dave, I just realized I was giving LJ Hoes scouting report instead of Schoop.

That makes sense Hoes has no pop or position.
