And the point slappy is trying to make is that casual fans will come to see big-time teams, especially those consistently ranked in the top 10. That will help revenue. MD football has sucked for so long that there are very few die-hard fans who are willing to give up their saturday and their cash to see them play. Especially, when said team is starting a linebacker at QB. They have no reasonable shot to win. Unfortunately, "any given Sunday" does not apply to Saturday.

There are lot's of entertainment options in the DC area, and for many, watching a 2-10 team play football is not very high on the list of options. Especially when the opponent is Wake Forest.
    Exactly.

I've made the same argument on various Big Ten web sites...arguing AGAINST the soft schedule many BiG teams have in the early season. Increasingly, fans aren't interested in these cream-puff games. I'm certainly not.

I'm a strong believer in the saying - If you want to be the best, play the best. Playing down does little to elevate your game.

Hopefully, they will be a bit more competitive a couple years down the road... (ya know... when they aren't starting a linebacker as their QB).

While I can be critical of some Md fans, etc...I do think the football team is going to be better than many think it will be. I was very dissapointed when they fired the Fridge.

As per my point - Purdue is absolutely horrible this year...yet, when they came within seconds of knocking off both OSU and Notre Dame...both undefeated teams....I was actually damn proud and excited. They've since fallen apart, but that's another story. I'd rather see these types of games, than against a cream-puff. I'll travel to W. Lafayette, and pay good money to see Purdue battle Oregon (as they have twice)...but have no interest in paying to watch Ball State or Toledo, etc. That was my point.

FYI - Maryland vs Michigan...I will be there....rooting for Blue, however. Maryland vs Purdue...I will be there, but rooting for the Boilers. Maryland vs anybody else....GO TERPS!

On the other end...not everyone in the Big Ten is happy about this deal, either:

Here is a better idea than moving to the big ten for Maryland: Just shut down sports at maryland. They are a money loser. Shut it down and save the students some money!

Perhaps yo uought to post this thrice. You know, for effect.

IF you think that UMD has been a stepchild in the ACC, wait 'till they get into the Big 10.

Recruits are gonna flock to them as opposed to the, I don't know... maybe 8 better football options ?

Maybe, maybe not. However I'm guessing the recruit not taken by those 8 teams will be better quality than the recruits not taken by ACC teams. Just a hunch. Not to mention a chance to be on tv and play in front of real football crowds

Oh you mean a chance to LOSE in front of real football crowds ? The Terps ain't exactly lit the ACC on fire. What makes you think they'll do any better in the lesser IQ/better football Big 10 ?

    Better football crowds ? Yep.

Worse academics and worse basketball crowds ? Yep.

We can agree to disagree about the move, but at the end of the day, it's a done deal

I know you get off on the masochistic schtick but try to keep up. The big 10 wants TV markets. That ain't either of the VA teams. They want UNC

I live in the UNC tv market, mini-weenie. So don't presume to preach to me.

The Big Ten wants MONEY. So does UMD, apparently.

So the john/pimp bought the UMD whore...

What big time college program/conference doesn't want money? In fact, the more, the better. That's been the name of the game for decades.

What turnip truck did you fall off of?

You're just pissed that none of the big conferences, including the SEC, wants any of the NC programs. Enjoy the Big East Light.

Please compare the UVA and UNC endowments to the junior colleges of the midwest and then get back to me.

    Sports ? Yeah, cool !

But that ain't the point of college, is it ?

Sure, let's compare to Mich and Northwestern.

UVa and UNC aren't even listed in the list of top 10 endowments, but Michigan and Northwest are. No Dook, either. Fail.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/0...ty_of_Michigan

But even if they were, endowments usually don't play into athletics unless specifically designated. That's rare. The fact is, the overall endowment numbers contain medical, dental and law school monies, which doesn't help athletics or undergraduate education. For example, large donations that are made to the university of Maryland medical school, in Baltimore, are usually earmarked for cancer or heart research, etc, and have no impact on operations or teaching at CP. When schools quote their endowment, they include all monies earmarked for the school, even if they have no impact on undergraduate education....and most certainly, athletics. Medical research monies are a huge percentage of a universities endowment.

I'm glad the Terps are moving

maybe now they will get a fair shake with Big Ten refs instead of Duke and NC's personal refs

several questionable calls went against an undermanned Terps football team tonight.....I'm proud UMD ...
