SS does much more than just being a (poor) replacement for a retirement plan. Personally I can't think that the average American is going to want to say to those children "Sorry, sucks to be you".

.... so why use SS monies vs the general fund?

    Late edit.......

How about having SS offer a plan to breakdown a part of your SS payment to "buy" insurance for things like coverage for your children upon your death... an separate offer to "buy" disability payment in case you need that coverage. By "buying" that special coverage your payment at 65 would be lower....

Who here would sign up with an independent plan and have them take your money for 40+ years and if you die before the age of 62 not allow YOU to specify who should receive you benefits?
I agree. I think it should be optional. But then no biatching to the government if you have no retirement income at 65. Americans in general are notoriously lousy when it comes to saving money.

SS was never intended to be a retirement plan. so many people have that misconception

I know better than to go back and forth with you on something. So we can agree to disagree and you can feel free to have the last word

    Happy Thanksgiving, APR.
And to you and yours DSumm.

I actually sailed past Loveland on my way to FC. The Japanese steel gulping down high test at about a gallon every 27 miles and CO2 helping to add to the AQI. FC is your old stomping grounds if I remember correctly. In fact, I'm pretty sure I saw someone had erected some signs that mentioned something about praying to Beazlebub that you never return to this little slice of paradice in N. CO.

    27 MPG... amateur.

It amuses me that they would be praying to one of my minor avatars.
