Default Republican and Lesbian, and Fighting for Acceptance of Both Identities

    Like unicorns

In 1996, Kathryn Lehman was a soon-to-be married lawyer working for Republicans in the House of Representatives. One of her major accomplishments: helping to write the law that bans federal recognition of same-sex marriages.

Today, Ms. Lehman, 53, no longer has a husband, and no longer identifies as straight. And she is a lobbyist for Freedom to Marry, which is devoted to overturning the very law she helped write, the Defense of Marriage Act. But Ms. Lehman is still a fervent Republican.
Many of these women say other lesbians are more put off by their political orientation than Republicans are by their sexual orientation.

It might be better if there were more Republican lesbian, I'm thinking. The party could use a little balancing, to say the least. And Gays should have more options, politically speaking, than to be welded to one party, hook, line, and sinker. I’m guessing it is possible to be pro-gay marriage, without buying into the complete reparatory of socialist claptrap. And I know for a fact that it is possible to support gay marriage while ignoring all the right-wing-nut fundamentalist claptrap. Bothe parties have their extremes, and these extremes appear to be expanding at the expense of the middle ground where reasonable people used to make their homes.

I think bullmikey came around a while back. He's pretty sensible and realistic. I don't always agree with him, but I respect his opinions.

I like the story title better than the thread title.

    Uhhhhh...

    If you say so.

But I don't believe I'm thinking any differently now than I was ten or twelve years ago when the subject first came to my attention.
