Default Is the Fiscal Cliff checkmate for Republicans?

What choices do Republicans in Congress have?

Option one - Extend Bush tax cuts for everyone except people making over $250k

Option two - Go over the cliff and give Obama and a more Democratic Senate more control over what tax cuts stay or go

Good points. The moves are limited. The third choice is to buck up and act like adults. The good news is the flight from Norquist has begun. Those who wish to help will be welcomed. Those that think it's all a joke can go to hell.

Negotiate on the revenue. They have to. which by the way will generate enough money to run the country for less than 9 days.

And absolutely state they will not move forward on the revenue until the promised spending cuts and entitlement reform are spelled out on paper.

We've seen this show before. Raise revenue and "promise" to address spending, which just never seems to happen.

The GSA can do without their parties this year. So can the military contractors.

I don't think entitlement cuts are going to be on the table for now. Repubs have no leverage right now. Most Dems aren't budging on Social Security. Maybe the issue will come back up a few months from now when Congress has to deal with raising the debt ceiling.

Prediction: the debt ceiling is raised and the deficit and debt are kicked down the road to the next artificial deadline.

Prediction: Grover Norquist will be thrown off the cliff.

Republican's are bailing on Norquist like rats deserting a sinking ship, and what started as a trickle is fast becoming a flood.

Even Kantor is stepping away and shoe box head is as backwards as they come. It's great. Reminds me of something as significant as the Berlin Wall coming down. There's all sorts of signs that meaningful dialogue is actually happening. We might get out of this yet.

    3. Let the Dems give you and the other takers whatever you want. We then declare bankruptcy. The takers live in cardboard boxes if they can find one while the other 53% rebuild the country and watch you starve.

They don't have to cut entitlements. First, look at what overhead can be cut then make adjustments in age for SS and the parameters for receiving welfare. The will have to raise the SS age to something like average lifespan -5.

Get yourself a brown paperbag and breathe into it for at least a minute. Better?

Welfare is a minimal expense and SS is not the problem, though I don't have a problem with raising the age. Medicare is the big bugaboo.

"Meaningful Dialogue" is definitely encouraging but the Tea Party hogtied John Boehner in 2010 and I don't see any real signs yet, that they are going to loosen the ropes any time soon.

I don't need to breathe into a paper bag. You and your ilk will need as many as you can get for clothing and shoes.

Both options are moot in that they are ideologically driven solutions that won't solve the economic problem. No matter what revenue option wins out the actual problem of too much spending remains. If spending isn't addressed then no amount of arguing over revenue will matter.

Maybe the republicans should just give the dems everything they want. The tax increase on the rich will do nothing to solve our budget problems. Give them everything. Then in two years if we're still in about the same place, well.......
