Default $32 MILLION/yr. for the Next 10 Years for City Schools?

    Say what????

That's right lemmings, $2.4 BILLION (that's Million with a "B") "...to shed underused school buildings and upgrade the most dilapidated ones..."

Guess all that money from the casinos and the lottery and wherever else they can get will pay for this.

It's not like these schools became dilapidated or underused over night.

    CHA-CHING!

I don't guess YB has been in a city school lately. Some of the city schools I've been in recently haven't changed much since I was in city schools in the 70's.

Same in the county. Hereford High, Catonsville High. Hell Catonsville Elementary is ancient.

A lot of city schools are in pretty bad shape. But school officials will probably spend the money on magic beans instead.

A new component of the city system's plan is the creation of an independent school construction authority that would oversee several aspects of the sweeping program.
This makes sense, and seemd to be a move in the right direction. This skills that make a person an excellent manager of education don't make a person proficient in construction management or evaluating renovation plans.

By 2025 the system would be using 77 percent of its space — it currently uses 65 percent — and the number of school buildings would drop from 163 to 137.
77%??? That's a terrible goal. How many successful businesses do you know of that keep close to 25% of their facilities empty? The goal should be over 95% and the only reason it should not be 100% is just in case the student population grows at some point in the future and more space is needed.

For years we have been paying to maintain, heat, cool, and clean huge EMPTY physical spaces that the school system should have sold off years ago. How much money do we spend heating unused facilities a year? How can a school system be so foolish and inefficient? I would not want these people teaching my kids.

Cool??? You obviously didn't go to city schools. I doubt they were cooling any empty buildings considering they didn't even cool the ones occupied with students.

Just in the administrators' offices pretty much...and in the computer rooms (for those schools with computer rooms). Hell, some people purposely tried to get sent to the principal's office on especially hot days.. just to chill in the A/C...

so where has all that money gone since the 70's?

Are we to beleive there has been no repair and maintenance $$$ in school budgets for 3 decades?

find out where the $$$ went before you throw more good $$$ after bad...

I don't know how to break this to you. But if you read a summary for each school, lack of air conditioning is included in almost all of them. They're not cooling a damn thing

Remember the mayor's plan to welcome 10,000 immigrants to the city with no consideration of their legal status?????? Many of the illegal kids and anchor babies will be going to Baltimore City schools. And BCCC as well with the passage of the illegal alien Dream Act!

It's so clear now. The school system is keeping empty buildings running to eventually house the 10 million illegal immigrants that SRB is smuggling into Baltimore.
