Default Here we go again....Congress looks at doing away with the $1 bill

    http://news.yahoo.com/congress-looks...-politics.html

American consumers have shown about as much appetite for the $1 coin as kids do their spinach. They may not know what's best for them either. Congressional auditors say doing away with dollar bills entirely and replacing them with dollar coins could save taxpayers some $4.4 billion over the next 30 years.

Vending machine operators have long championed the use of $1 coins because they don't jam the machines, cutting down on repair costs and lost sales. But most people don't seem to like carrying them. In the past five years, the U.S. Mint has produced 2.4 billion Presidential $1 coins. Most are stored by the Federal Reserve, and production was suspended about a year ago.
I'd bet a $1 that this never happens in my lifetime.

I've been to Canada. Buying a beer and getting $4+ in change sucks.

I've also been to the train station in New Brunswick, NJ. The stupid ticket machine gave me $7 in $1 coins.

    Keep the change.

The dollar coins never worked since they didn't get rid of the paper one. That's what they need to do...

I'd never even seen one till I got a bucket of them in change at the airport parking lot. Talk about a cheesy looking token. Why would doing away with the dollar be a good idea?

The short of it is that coins last longer than paper money.

Maybe these dumb arses should focus on figuring out how to pay back all those dollars we owe.

I guess they have their priorities though.

If they get rid of $1 bills, what will I give the strippers?

You'll have to use super glue.

Or just be a big spender and hand out fives.

You'll make a lot of friends.

I don't know why the government has such a hard on for these dollar coins. Nobody wants them, no one will use them and its just a plain stupid idea. Save $4 billion over 30 yrs??? Sure lets do that and continue with TRILLION dollar deficits.

$4 billion over 30 yrs, is 42 cents a year for each man woman and child in america. SO a family of 4 saves $1.68 cents a year. They will probably drop $2 a year down the gutter.

    Somebody check my math.

True. They last forever in bank vaults. This has been true for over 100 years and is the reason why there are so many uncirculated Morgan silver dollars available to collectors. The only dollar coins that were ever regularly used in commerce were US trade dollars in the mid-1800's Chinese trade.

I can't remember what I did in Toronto a long time ago. I think I drank enough to convince myself that the exchange rate was better and gave out Canadian $5s. Or maybe I gave coins. Who knows.

On another thread it's said that no cut is too small when it comes to our budget dilemma...yet this is somehow a bad idea?

Zinc dollars with a spit of copper in the crucible. Cost 8 cents to produce. Is that the best we can do? The concept is bass akwards. Restore value, don't debase it!
