Default Morgan State University breaks ground for $72 million business school

"Morgan State University officials broke ground Wednesday on a $72 million business school — the first step, they said, in a plan to expand the campus' western edge while improving a troubled shopping center.

The 140,000-square-foot Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management will include a lecture hall and classrooms, as well as hotel rooms and a large kitchen for hospitality classes. The building, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014, is the first of three planned for land where a vacant hardware store stood most recently.

Morgan President David Wilson said the project marked "the dawn of a new era at Morgan" as the campus edged westward. When the business school is complete, Wilson plans to begin work on an adjacent behavioral and social sciences building and a school of community health. The university also intends to build a bridge over Hillen Road to connect the two sides of the campus."

We have too many B-schools. Morgan would've been better off making upgrades to its engineering school.

    What's next?

Having a $72 million dollar new business school building is a starting point.

Best wishes as without great leadership and some luck, Morgan will have tough time making the business school a success.

Simple question of why should Business majors, both undergraudate and graudate students, come to Morgan?

The most popular master's degree in the US is the MBA (by far...). And "by far" I mean, that 22% of Master's degrees for men are MBAs and the next most popular degree program is like 3%.

More degrees means more revenue. You know the saying: Money talks...

There are now 4 B-schools in Baltimore: Hopkins, Loyola, Baltimore/Towson and Morgan. The latter two are taxpayer subsidized and have no chance whatsoever of competing against the state's flagship B-school in College Park.

I think it's wasteful and negligent on the part of the state to start up a B-school in an overrepresented market, aimed primarily at students whose academic and professional accomplishments aren't up to snuff, especially at a time when the state is digging deeper into our pockets.

As I stated above, the $$$ should be used to improve Morgan's engineering school. Give it at least one program it can brag about.

Morgan will draw it B-school students from the MD state penitentiary.

Read all of my comments above.

Morgan is spreading it limited $$$ to thinly.

Better to have one great program than several underfunded 4th rate programs.

With respect to publicly-financed B-schools, the State of Maryland has a pecking order:

    (1) UMCP B-school; and

    (2) Baltimore/Towson.

Morgan's B-school will be a dumping ground for those unqualified for admission to either (1) or (2) above. It won't attract first or second level talent.

Towson University is moving ahead with plans to offer a joint MBA degree with the University of Baltimore next fall, despite Morgan State University's decision to oppose the program's approval.
The state's higher education secretary, Calvin Burnett, last month gave his blessing to the program, saying its educational benefits outweighed concerns that it would draw away students from other institutions.
But Earl Richardson, Morgan State's president, on April 11 formally appealed Burnett's decision, arguing that it "threatens the future viability" of the university's existing MBA program.
This is from 2005. I am guessing that Towson won the appeal.

From the story linked in my post above:

[QUOTE]In Richardson's letter, he called the process of evaluating the Towson-UB program "flawed and biased," saying that it unnecessarily duplicates Morgan's MBA program and "actually promotes segregation" by undermining Morgan's goal of attracting more white students.
At Morgan, a historically black university located in Baltimore City, about 89 percent of the total student body in 2003 was black, compared with 11 percent at Towson, according to state data.
Morgan State had 19 MBA graduates in 2004, compared to 164 at UB and 332 at Loyola College. Richardson argued that the most likely cause of declining MBA enrollment at Morgan has been the growth of competing MBA programs in the Baltimore area.
"If approved, the proposed joint MBA would make it even more difficult to achieve racial diversity in the Morgan student body," Richardson wrote.[\QUOTE]

I wonder how Morgan is trying to attract more white students?
