Well Matt let me correct myself....the place of illegal aliens is somewhere outside the United States borders.

If the laws require bilingual services then those laws should be changed except in regards to emergency services. There should not be bilingual ballots like in Montgomery County and it is troublign that in some parts of the country you have to be bilingual to get a job.

I have friends who live in South Florida and Los Angeles. They have witnessed illegal aliens get angry when they go into a businesses and nobody can speak Spanish to them. Isn't this America???? These people come to America illegally and demand that they be able to get around not speaking our language????? I sure hope Carroll County passes the English langauge ordinance at least it sends a message to the illegals that they are not welcome there.

Also Americans really know how to run. People have fled Baltimore City for Carroll County because of crime and drugs and the thug mentality that now permeates teh city. People flee California and Florida to escape illegal immigration and taxes, people flee New Jersey to flee taxes and the business unfriendly environment. But the problems only follow them. We need to STAND AND FIGHT for our country. Stand up and fight against illegal immigration, taxes, abortion, and high density development and in defense of capital punishment.

Again, what are you doing to change things? When are you going to run for office? How would you friends know the immigration status of an individual? I think that a person who is biased, as I believe you are, against people of Hispanic origin, could very well interpret frustration as anger. Yes, I am opposed to illegal immigration and I am equally opposed to harassment of people simply because they appear to be Hispanic.

A friend of ours works at the Wells Fargo in Greektown. Has been with the company through all the changes and was told learn Spanish or loose your job. She learned it since she is pretty high in the chain a d like us all, needs her job. She was originally transferred to that location because she is fluent in Greek. One of the comparisons she makes between the two cultures is the sense of entitlement of the Hispanics and their unwillingness to assimilate. She says while the Greeks joked with her about their broken English and sometimes comical usage of terminology, they would try and conduct their business with as much English as they could citing practice makes perfect. the Hispanic customers totally refuse to communicate with bank employees in English or even try to understand. Not trying to paint all with that brush, but the refusal to assimilate to their new country does seem to be most prevalent within the Hispanic community. That's the part that baffles me about this whole illegal argument. Why the stubbornness? Obviously they prefer the USA to their country so why are they such ungrateful guests?

No, I haven't but my guess would be they are afraid of loosing their identity, their culture. If that's the case, IMO it's an excuse not a reason. Many immigrants have kept their traditions, language and core culture alive while embracing their new home. We celebrate these cultures with our ethnic festivals and they are a wonderful way to introduce new and exciting music, food and traditions to those unfamiliar with them. Learning another language works both ways. What discussions have you had with Latinos on the subject?

It becomes part of casual conversation that is as normal as me saying I'm from back east. Some of those here illegally are quite honest about it. I also know a few people that have overstayed their VISAs and in one case, my friend was offered money to marry a girl to keep her in the country.

I have. And many Mexican's, American or otherwise feel the southwest part of the US was wrongly taken from them and it is Americans who are in their country and therefore Americans should be speaking their language.

And here in PRico, the same thing is going on. Many believe the US wrongly invaded their island in 1898. They refuse to learn English or even teach it in public schools. And many PRicans, leaders and citizens alike, will not accept statehood without an agreement from congress that would allow them to keep "their culture." Their culture mainly meaning their Spanish language. And all public schools must continue to teach all courses, except English, in Spanish even after they become a state.

An excellent well thought out post SoSad. The illegals you have met and talked to who were so open and honest about their journey and being in the US illegally seems to indicate that they do not fear for their safety in America as they did while crossing Mexico. A good refection on how most further south of Mexico feel about America. I once hired an illegal guy from Guatemala who spoke English very well, who was polite, honest and very eager to work hard. I only wished I was in a better place in my life at the time to help him out. I often wonder what became of him.
