I think what you have linked on UK BlandFood, is pretty much a non-story that is just being played up in the media because one particular General is making noise.
The UK army, unlike over here, is utilised for all sorts of jobs needing to keep services running especially emergency services such as Fire Ambulance, Police and Security.
I remember during a countrywide Fireman's strike, myself and a team of submariners were out driving fire trucks and fighting fires.
This year has been a particularly taxing year on the army in that they have been used for a couple of months for security and support during the London Olympics. They drove fuel tankers during that drivers strike and provided security for many of the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The headlines are misleading and meant to be sensational because the British Army is not, "Shutting Down". All essential positions will still be manned and any and all services in support of the troops in Afghanistan and other parts of the world we still go on no differently and just as professionally and efficiently as it does any other day of the year.
The British Army gives Leave to non-essential personnel and reserves every year during the Holiday Season they are just giving non-essential personnel a few days extra this year as a reward for hard work and the extended hours they have put in.![]()
