The ultimate individual prize goes to Johnny Football

I don't see a pure defender ever winning it. Johnny M deserved it. His numbers were better then Newton's. Did not realize he had rushed for so many yards. Good on em.

...perhaps more impressive than his numbers was the fact that he was the first Freshman, ever, to win the Heisman.

If he hangs around in college, can't imagine how good he will be as a Juniuor/Senior? Scary good.

I don’t see that as impressive but more of a flaw in the system. You can’t tell me that H Walker or Bo Jackson were not the best players in the country each year they played and both only won it once. The voters got it right this time, that is all. So many times, in my life time the best player did not get it. Tommy Frazier, Rocket, etc., you cannot convince me that Ty Detmer or Gino Torretta were the best players in college football when they won it. IMHO

While times are changing, it's still very impressive that it was awarded to a Freshmen. It's impressive simply because the Freshman only has one season to accumulate the "resume" to offset any biases there are against awarding it to a Freshmen. IMO, the Freshman candidate can not win the Heisman by simply having more yards, more TD's, or, in general, a slightly better "resume". IMO, the Freshman candidate has to have a SUPERIOR resume to offset those biases. In the voting, there can be no margins of doubt, less the Heisman go to the candidate with a greater depth and larger body of work.

In the case of Walker (Freshman year) - He was beaten out of the Heisman by George Rogers, who had rushed for about 170 yds more that year, and who was an upper classman. While there's no question that Walker was the superior athlete...he did not have that superior resume (in college), as only a Freshman, to offset the biases towards awarding it to a Freshmen. George Rogers was peaking the year he won the Heisman.

Can't say I agree with you because there should not be a resume question since it is for the best player of the season. I agree with the voters this year but if a player has to have a resume, that is wrong. It is the Heisman not the Hall of Fame. Plus, UGA won the Championship. Plus I am a Walker Homer...hahaha.

Yes, Heisman should only be based on performance for the year, i agree. But, with that said, it's very hard for a voter not to be aware of, and potentially swayed by, the complete body of work....especially when there's no clear, dominant player that year. At that point, I say the nod will go to the candidate with more credentials (ie, the upper classman).

    That's just human nature.

I'm reminded of the inherent biases during NCAA selection day. Sometimes teams with a pedigree, but with weaker record, weaker SOS, etc get a bump to a higher seed over teams with little, or no history. Happens every year....even though a teams seeding should Only be based on data from that year...pedigree shouldn't enter into the voting. But it does. .Happens every year.
