And maybe the new Syrian regime doesn't want Russia meddling in their business? The new regime opposes Assad so I'm sure they also do not like the Russians either.

Assad with Russia's backing maybe forcing a real wild fire through out the middle east. He may be looking to take everyone down with him. He must know he is a dead man along with his generals. His wife too.

Exactly my point. Would you want to negotiate with the Russians who have been supplying Assad the weapons to kill you? Or do you want help from the United States who would stab you in the back as soon as look at you in their total support for Israel?

I would respectfully suggest that it is not the Russians that are the problem in the Middle East! I think you might want to look closer to home.

I'm sure Russia would like nothing more than to choke off the oil to the western world if they could. And now that they have a natural gas pipe line going to Western Europe they can, and have threatened to close the valve when Europe was opposing their aggression into Georgia.

Fortunatly the Russians are a decade or two from having the Blue water navy required for such a venture but maybe those that questioned it can now see why going into Libya was so important for Europe and their thirst for Libyan oil? Stop that source from flowing and Russia would have captured more of the market.

The thirst for oil comes from a need to keep economies rolling and people working. It is a viscous escalation due to the increase in the world's population. Or maybe we could all just go back to farming, hunting and fishing, and sitting around camp fires. Personally that last part does sound good to me, but unfortunately those days are long gone and unrealistic in todays situation.

On a slightly different note, why would the domestic regime be worried about its (Obama's) al Nusra Front getting their hands on chemical weapons?

Also on Sunday, Russia downplayed White House fears that a desperate Assad could deploy chemical weapons and said the greatest danger was that part of Syria's chemical arsenal could fall into the hands of rebels. Both U.S. and Israeli officials have also voiced concern that chemical armaments could end up in the hands of insurgents, who have overrun a number of military bases. Syria's fragmented rebel legions includes hard-core Islamist brigades hostile to the West and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.
