    Default "rock star"wolf killed ......

the introduction of the wolves in the yellowstone area has certainly been a success .......

controversy now over hunting of the wolves that stray out of the parks ......

Yellowstone National Park’s best-known wolf, beloved by many tourists and valued by scientists who tracked its movements, was shot and killed on Thursday outside the park’s boundaries, Wyoming wildlife officials reported.

The wolf, known as 832F to researchers, was the alpha female of the park’s highly visible Lamar Canyon pack and had become so well known that some wildlife watchers referred to her as a “rock star.” The animal had been a tourist favorite for most of the past six years.

    Was this wolf poached?

From the article, it sounds like it was killed by a legally licensed hunter, in an area that permits hunting, during the approved season, and in accordance with all local, state, and federal laws.

If Yellowstone researches want a wolf petting zoo, put up a fence.

(That being said, I think it sucks to "trophy" hunt - hunting for meat is one thing, hunting for horns or pelts is another. It's killing, not hunting.)

I went to Lamar Valley in Yellowstone this past August to look for wolves but didn't see any.

It was near 90 at the park and wildlife sightings were few, other than buffs and some elk from a distance.

But I do know enough about the surrounding area to know that if a wolf or a Grizzly wanders off the park their life maybe short lived due to proximity of towns, resorts and ranches.

Yellowstone is a national treasure. I have seen the wolves, grizzly, buffalo, elk, etc there. The trick is getting up before dawn and staking out a nice place. I was out there a couple years ago, really can't wait to make it back out.

    Agreed.

My Brother retired in Jackson Hole last year so my chances to get to Yellowstone and the fanastic Tetons have increased greatly

When I was there in late May last year it was awesome. I saw a Sow Grizz and her cubs, tons of Elk and Buffalo in Yellowstone, and almost walked into a a cow moose on a trail in the Tetons.

    Can't wait to get back.

Every time I see this post I think the lead singer of The J Geils band was murdered.

Never have had the chance to see Yellowstone, but it's something I've always wanted to do. It's a shame that about the wolf, but like Jeebus said, it appears it may have just been a not so great set of legal circumstances. Still sad, though.
