Default Anne Arundel Sees ANOTHER Fatal Pedestrian Accident

Lost count, but there have been at least 4 or 5 in the past month. An 18 yr old Severn woman was killed last night while crossing the street in Annapolis!

At the time this collision occurred it was raining heavily, Owens was wearing dark clothing and was not crossing at a marked crosswalk. Shipp’s vehicle had a green signal and there are no pedestrian control signals on the north side of this intersection, where Owens was attempting to cross.
Unless the reporter is messing up it's all on the pedestrian on this one, and I feel really bad that the driver has to live the rest of their life with this trauma.

I don't know if the reporter could possibly mess up that much. I can't find stats, but it seems to me most ped- vehicle accidents are the ped's fault.

This one occurred just outside Annapolis City proper, and lest anyone think it is the quaint downtown street most of us envision when we hear " Annapolis" this is a very busy road and one block from the very speedy and busy interchange with Rt. 50 and I-97

There's a traffic light there at West St and Rte 2, but no crosswalk. Drivers heading N at that point are accelerating to enter the route 50 ramp and probably don't expect to see a pedestrian. I'm always alert there because that used to be such a popular intersection for panhandlers.

    Be careful out there.

While the Sun tells us a teenage girl was killed.

A teenage girl was killed after being hit by a Jeep in Annapolis Friday, Anne Arundel County police said. 18-year-old Ajia Marketta Owens of Severn was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Owens had tried to cross Solomon's Island Road, running in front of two vehicles, according to police. The first managed to stop, but the second, a 2007 Jeep Wrangler, hit her, police said.
Sorry to hear, but it sounds like it was her fault.

Yes, it was "her fault" and I do also feel sorry for the driver.

However, at some point, one has to look at the design of roads like this. This is an incredibly pedestrian-hostile intersection. It was designed strictly for automobile traffic with pedestrian cross-walks added as an after-thought only because the law requires it. No consideration was made for pedestrians to get around-- god forbid someone might want to walk from the movie theater to the diner without crossing multiple streets and wating 5 minutes each time.

    dogstarman--

Yes, I recall being down in that area once and trying to cross the street. It had snowed recently and snow was removed from parking lots and dumped on the sidewalks, making getting around quite difficult.

Another pedestrian struck--not yet a fatality.

A pedestrian was struck by a car along Route 50 in Annapolis on Sunday night, sustaining life-threatening injuries, according to fire and police officials.

Emergency personnel responded to the ramp from eastbound Route 50 onto Rowe Boulevard about 8:37 p.m. and found the severely injured 33-year-old man, and transported him to Anne Arundel Medical Center, said Chief Michael Cox, an Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman, and a dispatcher at the Maryland State Police Glen Burnie Barrack.

The man was in critical condition late Sunday, state police said.
It's a little unclear whether this was "along Route 50" or on the ramp.

I use this ramp often - it is a very long ramp, the entryway to downtown Annapolis from rte 50, and anyone not greatly exceeding the speed limit there will be run over. I believe the ramp's posted speed limit is 50; good luck if you dare to drive under 65 there.

I know you said it as a joke, but that's what some traffic architects have effectively "banned" (with the penalty of death): WALKING.

Default MSP need help in fatal hit and run in Anne Arundel County

Maryland State Police are asking for help from the public as they continue their search for the driver involved in a hit and run fatal crash this morning in Anne Arundel County.

The crash occurred between 3:00 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. today on I-97 between Rt. 32 and Benfield Blvd. A passenger in a vehicle that overturned was ejected into the southbound lanes of I-97. Apparently as he was standing up in either the left or center lane of southbound I-97, he was struck by a southbound vehicle that did not stop. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
