The unions are the thieves. They want to be able to force people to pay for services not requested. It is not a 'free rider' issue because the worker is being forced to take the ride. So it really is about freedom. That said, the more likely issue is simple greed. IMO, taxation is the price we pay to live in a civilized society. All the countries in the world with no taxation, or weak tax collection are crappy places to live.

You can live off the grid and not pay taxes or you can leave the US and move to one of those tax-free, but corrupt, paradises. No one is pointing a gun at your head forcing you to live in society and pay taxes.
