This has been around for a long time. Starting of course with the infamous dumping of a Super Bowl winning quarterback Trent Dilfer. Yea we know the Ravens went five games without a TD that year but with a stupendous defense, won the SB. And, most of us agreed that getting rid of Dilfer for Elvis sounded like a good idea. But Elvis – who never really entered the building and quickly left the building – was a complete failure.
And then they played around a bit with Cunningham and we can’t forget Chris Redman and Blake but then enters one Kyle Boller. Billick was so impressed with Boller, the guy who could sit at mid-field and throw the ball into a trash can in the end zone, that he [Billick] finally was shown the door because he was convinced that Boller was the QB that would finally put an offense on the field and lead us again to the promised land. Not to be.
Enter Joe Flacco in 2008. Thrown into the position in his rookie year, Flacco has performed remarkably. As Peter Schmuck pointed out, “Over the span of his career, Flacco has more combined regular-season wins and postseason victories than any other quarterback.” Think about that for a minute. Over the last five years, Flacco has more regular season and postseason wins THAN ANY OTHER QUARTERBACK. More than all of the “elite” QB’s in the league. Pretty impressive don’t you think?
Apparently not impressive enough for the Ravens. Flacco is three games away from his contract expiring and still the Ravens aren’t quite sure if he’s THE ONE.
Given the Ravens track record with QB’s over the years, it’s no surprise they’ve handled Flacco so poorly. Maybe they put too much pressure on him by waiting so long to show their confidence in him even though he has more wins than any other QB in the last five years.
The Trent Dilfer curse continues.
