Default Flacco should go 'hometown discount'

Why do these conversations never occur?

Joe: Hey Steve, I know I have been very inconsistent this season. I love it here and I want to be a Raven for life. I also do NOT want to put my team in a very bad salary CAP position. I want the team to be able to sign the best free agents over the next decade. So give me 10 years at $9M per year with as much as possible up front. That's more money than my entire family can spend for generations. Let's win many championships together. Deal?

Steve: Joe, that sounds good. If the going gets too tough just tell me who you want fired. I am a regular guy who loves Miller Lite and the Orioles almost as much as I like locking out you players so I can have a few more billion. I really wanted to fire people during the lockout I forced, but got a lot of bad press when it was reported I was going to.

Steve will have the same amount no matter what Joe gets. Zero impact on Steve. A great impact on the team.

If a guy is going to get more money than he could spend, wouldn't he want to be on great teams instead of possible handicapping the team financially and be on losing teams? That is the question.

Did Steve Biscotti fire you once, or something?

No, I have always been fortunate enough to have a job with benefits...which is more than I can see for Bigshotti's sweatshop employees.

That won't happen because Joe won't be speaking to Steve about his contract. That will come through his agent -- who will try to get the most for Joe and himself!

Last time I checked, the agent works for the player, not the other way around. Joe can dictate whatever he wants. The agent will still get his $300,000 either way. Why would Joe want to be stuck with a real bad (4-12) team every year because he broke the salary CAP bank? He could be on a great team almost every year and still be a multi multi millionaire.

Hey, contentment and happiness is worth a few $M when you have $100M!!!

You must have never heard a player talk about his agent. Most players defer contract questions to their agent and generally take their advice, it's why they pay them.

Baseball players accept a hometown discount (with their agent) when there is no CAP in place. Joe can go the accepted route and potentially doom his team for a decade and be miserable. His choice. : )

So it's okay to overpay Suggs, Ray Lewis, Haloti Ngata, Ed Reed. But Joe's obligated to give up a "hometown discount". Sorry. That dog don't hunt. The Ravens created their cap problems; it's on THEM to sort it out; it's not on Joe.

How many have done that since free agency started in baseball? I can only think of three.

Pay Flacco and build around him and Ray Rice. Start rebuilding the D next year. That might mean saying good bye to Ray and Ed.

    Need to revise this...

Joe: Hey Steve, I know I am, at best, a middle of the road QB. I love it here and I want to be a Raven for life. I also do NOT want to put my team in a very bad salary CAP position. I want the team to be able to sign the best free agents over the next decade. So give me 3 years at $8M per year with as much as possible up front. That's more money than my entire family can spend for generations. Let's win many championships together. Deal?

In the beginning of the season, it was said Joe's price was going up every game... now it's going down every game.
