Reuters journalists: Israeli troops assaulted us, forced us to strip in street

HEBRON, West Bank -- Israeli soldiers have been accused of punching two Reuters cameramen and forcing them to strip in the street, before letting off a tear gas canister in front of them, leaving one of them needing hospital treatment.

Israel's military said Thursday it took the allegations seriously.

"The regional brigade commander was ordered to open an investigation," Israeli Defense Forces spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said in an email.

I don't think so. That would involve infering the perfect people did something wrong. I'm expecting a tirade about how Arabs with camera's constitute an existential threat to Israel by depriving them of their superman like abilities in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

Israeli soldier: 'Cameras are our kryptonite'

A recent article on Ynet, and excellent analysis by Ali Abunimah on the Electronic Intifada, yields this gem of a quote (emphasis Abunimah’s):

One soldier admits that the presence of cameras – presumably in the hands of Palestinian and other videographers – inhibits the soldiers from being even more abusive:

    T. says the cameras on the ground undermine the forces’ efforts. “A commander or an officer sees a camera and becomes a diplomat, calculating every rubber bullet, every step. It’s intolerable, we’re left utterly exposed. The cameras are our kryptonite.”

Soldiers: Our hands are being tied

The past week has seen two incidents involving soldiers and Palestinians causing the IDF much embarrassment. An initial investigation of an incident in the West Bank last Friday in which IDF soldiers were forced to flee a mob of stone-throwing Palestinians suggests that the troops did not act in a professional manner.

An IDF inquiry conducted by officers in the Judea and Samaria Division determined that the soldiers should have demonstrated resolve instead of retreating.

A video that surfaced over the weekend shows Palestinians stoning Israeli security forces, eventually forcing them to run for cover - similiar to the incident in Hebron.

I'm sure the IDF was just "retaliating" for something, or the journalists were "using civilians as shields." You know, the usual song and dance justification for whatever.

Based on the story, I don't see anything to justify the soldiers' behavior.

As for the cameras, I can see why soldiers don't like them besides abuses being caught on camera. Attack soldiers, film retaliation. Attack soldiers, film retaliation.

In Vietnem we didn't much like those vultures filming or snapping our dead and wounded. We sort of hinted that there would be some serious fragging happening if we ever caught them doing it. Didn't wanr some mom seeing her baby boy all shot-up on the evening news before she got the telegram. Should that ever have happened, a punch in the face would have been the least of their problems.

By the way, wasn’t Reuters the outfit doctoring their photographs to make it look like the Israelis were causing more collateral damage than they were during the last dust up between the IDF and their perpetually stupid adversaries? So there’s a double incentive for the IDF not to be fond of that particular breed of vulture; they are obviously anti-Semitic as well as pro terrorist, as if the killing og Jews was a fine, righteous thing. I'm surprised they didn’t do more than rough them up a little. They showed considerable restraint, IMHO.
