I have been thinking about that too. I think everyone (except the real gun extremists) can agree that people with documented mental health issues should not be able to buy guns. But how to you draw those boundaries? If you have an autistic kid should you have to give up your weapons? How about a wife with depression? No guns at all? At what point would some people stop familiy members from seeking help if documenting mental health problems might trigger gun confiscation? Kind of a tough dynamic.

Oh, if we only knew as much about mental illness as we do about guns.

Autism and depression aren't the problem. More severe types of illness are.

The public's knowledge of mental illness is piss-poor, leading to misunderstandings, incarceration and worse.

    This has to change.

Yet another post where you have proven you inability to grasp facts. He could have walked in there with a sling shot and would have been better armed than the teachers in the school. He could have done the same damage with handguns.

The police did not arrive until after he had already killed himself. They had the same weapons he had.

    2. Alcohol kills many many more people than drugs. Is that to say "how can you want to drink alcohol and still want guns illegal" ? Because you see the War on Drugs as an abysmal failure and waste of the tax payers money is it shame on you for not allowing assault weapons ? Can you clarify your point

3.And you should be allowed to keep your assault rifle but not be allowed to buy another one. You don't need it.

    4. And yet you are willing to go through whatever strident steps the state requires in order for you to drive your car. Why not the same for gun ownership ?
Yes I do - I will use it for practice. Being in the military, I need to keep my skills up and I haven't had training on an assault weapon in a while, only handguns.
You made a comment akin to "you people", which means that you are finger pointing. The gun debate is recent and it has come out of nowhere.
I knew it was starting when Jon Stewart starting making his comments. You could tell he was trying not to piss off a lot of his audience and saying "there needs to be a gun debate" - but is that the biggest issue of our time?
I said that, just like cars, you shouldn't have to have a license to own a car, just a license to use it.
    Alcohol is the same thing.

The biggest issue here is that people treat death as if it is he ultimate worst thing - when the reality is that it is just a part of life.

What qualifies a weapon as an assault rifle?

And please do tell what strident steps are required to get a drivers license? At 15 1/2, with just a drivers permit, I was riding my motorcycle around Los Angeles. If you want strident, look to Europe and their requirements to get a license. Strident my ***!

The most important designator is "Select Fire" capability - the capability to switch from semi auto to full auto.

Without that feature, it is simply a semi-automatic rifle with scary looking attachments.
