Default Man shot near Mondawmin Mall in West Baltimore

Homicide detectives responded to the scene because of the severity of the man's injuries, said Detective Jeremy Silbert, a police spokesman.

Officers on a routine patrol of the area about 7:40 p.m. heard gunshots coming from the 1700 block of Gwynn Falls Parkway, in the city's Parkview/Woodbrook neighborhood, and responded, police said.

At the location, which is between Mondawmin Mall and Druid Hill Park, they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said.
The area around Mondowmin Mall has always been unsafe after dark.

That's a "solid, middle-class" neighborhood. The news report must be a lie.

I'm a registered Democrat who used to be VERY pro-gun control, to the point of secretly wishing guns could just be banned, outright. My mind has slowly changed on this, however...through hearing the arguments on both sides, it's just simply dawned on me that the gun ban arguments just aren't logical. I've done a lot of thinking about it, and I strongly believe that the "anti-" sentiment comes from a place of fear for a lot of people....they just are flat-out afraid of guns, in a way they are not afraid of knives, machetes, clubs, or any other weapon. It's "hoplophobia", as the poster Sonora Rebel has often said. If I try to imagine a future where we start seeing huge increases in maimings and deaths from people stabbing each other (lets imagine these increase drastically once a gun ban is put into effect, if you want to have a hypothetical reason for the increase), I can't begin to imagine anyone ever calling for a knife ban. No -- people on both sides of the poltitical spectrum would understand, rightly, that a knife is JUST A TOOL....a tool that is no inherently evil or bad, just a tool that can be USED for good or bad. And it's a tool that is needed too much for its "good" use....it would be understood that getting rid of all knives, or even severely limiting their use would a) be an unfair burden on people who just want to use them for their good purpose (cutting food, etc), and b) probably would only keep them out of the hands of people who only intended to use them for their good purpose....and those who wanted to use them for a nefarious reason (ie, stabbing someone to death) isn't going to care about following a knife ban anyway.

I truly have problem with the idea of gun registration, denying them to people with violent police records, or people with mental illness. I even sometimes think (sorry, gun proponents!) that maybe we could even require some basic firearms courses....sort of how we require people show, to some extent, they know how to operate a car. I know it says "shall make no law" but that part just seems reasonable, given how dangerous they can be. But restricting ownership to otherwise non-criminal types of citizens does nothing to keep them out of the hands of the people who use them for bad. I'd love it if there were a way to take them all away, permanently, from those bad people....but there isn't, of course, and since a gun is the one "equalizer", the one weapon that can allow, for instance, a 90 year old woman, or say, the fabled 98-pound weakling who isn't particularly a good fighter to overcome and beat one of those bad people, because it is so powerful and works from a distance. Guns work for good, too -- if you don't think so, we should immediately disarm the police and military.

    That's a misquote...
    Here's the actual...

"I wouldn't exactly call all of Mondawmin "underprivileged". It's a pretty solidly middle class area north of the mall... "

And for a trip down bs.com's bigoted lane...

I lived in the 3300 block of Liberty Heights across from Hanlon Park from 1957 thur 1975, and you are telling a lie. I guess car batteries and tires where not stolen in white areas. LOL LOL batteries and tires LOL LOL I don't believe you, based on your posting history. Frank Robinson, Lenny Moore, and Connie Johnson(orioles Frist black pitcher) all lived in the area.

True, but I found it interesting that the most recent data for violent crime in Mondawmin in 2010 was lower than the figure for overall Baltimore City in the year 2000. Both seem to be on a steady downward trend (although the rate of decline in Mondawmin is a bit slower).
