    The NRA's "gun-first" mentality does more harm than good in terms of responsible gun ownership. They provide so much firepower for the anti-gun crowd that a reasonable dialogue is nearly impossible.

    Not the entire Congress but they have influence over enough Congress members to influence gun policies and regulations. Not having the support of the NRA isn't beneficial to Republicans and some Democrats in conservative districts.
