The emotions of the extremely small distraught group that are victims of extremely rare events shouldn't dictate widespread policies. If we were talking about a reasonably common event, it would be different. Traumatic and horrible? Yes. Something we should substantially redefine our society by? Not at all.
Your point would be well served back in the 50's through the 90's. However, in the last decade things have gotten crazier and crazier with nuts and automatic weapons around schools. Drastic situations call for drastic measures that would not be necessary in the past. Things have changed for the worse in this world. Ergo, you cannot act the same.

Seems to me like you want to make 50 million American kids to go to school in a correctional facility to protect tens of them a year because you're incredibly bad at assessing risk.

    Agree with you 100%.

The lowest cost option where school administrators would NOT have to hire a single additional employee, or so much as put 1 foot of razor wire around any school perimeter, would be to simply change a few laws in all 50 states where responsible, adult teachers have the option to carry a concealed weapon on their person all day, every day on school grounds.

Decades ago when hijacked jets were the worst we could expect, Archie Bunker offered to solve the problem by having every jet passenger bring a gun aboard a jet. Problem solved.

    Sound too extreme?

Then get prepared for the inevitable future school/workplace/"GUN FREE" zone massacres that statistics imply will happen again in the not to distant future if you limit yourself exclusively to the use of non violent measures to deter real violence

    Open question to all Sunspotters:

Has there ever been an uncontrolled massacre at any gun show in any U.S. state? Either inside the building, where most attendees are asked not to carry ammo inside, and where every firearm is verified to be unloaded by appropriate security personnel, as in local law enforcement?

[And let me add that in EVERY such gun show I attended, NOBODY was patted down, frisked, or checked via metal detector.]

Has there ever been any massacre outside of a gun show, as in a parking lot?

The odds are that at least one such incident has happened in the past, but I personally have no knowledge of any such occurrance.

You would think that with a proliferation of firearms [hundreds if not thousands at any one event] surely if guns cause crime, there should be many such massacres happening yearly at gun shows across these states.

Anybody want to share some information? Just curious.

To those unfamilar with the typical environment inside a typical gun show, very many vendors [FFL Holders engaged in the lawful business of selling legal firearms to lawful, qualified residents] are standing around their tables with fully loaded sidearms strapped to their belts in plain view to all attendees.

Rest assured, should any psycho even try to go on a shooting rampage in a local gun show, he or she would be perforated with impacted bullets in short order before falling to the floor, dead.

    Hence the original question above.

Given the number of negligent discharges with injuries I can find if I search for "gun show injured" and my experiences with some of the people who show up to the events (vendors and customers) who insist on keeping their fingers on the trigger and flagging others I don't find these things to be the safest environment. I also don't think that if someone decided to shoot the place up that there wouldn't be a pretty big friendly fire risk given the way some people handle their weapons.

These mass shootings at schools are very rare. If you provide a large enough population with a high enough exposure time with firearms there will be unfortunate events due to negligence. I know people want to assume that providing teachers with the ability to conceal carry at work seems like a great idea, but if you get enough teachers involved at least some of them are going to be irresponsible not properly securing or handling their weapons.

There are enough negligent discharge events that end in injuries from legitimate CCW holders that a large teacher population carrying firearms is going to have their morons who will have their own negligent discharges.

The idea of having dedicated personnel such as police resource officers who have good periodic training, proper understanding of ROE, and can focus on being tactical seems like possibly decent idea.

I don't disagree with giving teachers that option, but then unfortunately you run the risk that a teacher could become mentally ill and pull off a shooting of say the administrators of the school or heaven forbid, students.

I also would have to say that a teacher or teachers armed with only a handgun would probably have little chance of stopping someone armed with an assault weapon, and full body armor. It would be like a few people trying to stop a rampaging charging elephant each armed with a 38 revolver. The odds would be extremely low, albeit not impossible. I still think my solution is the best.
