Sunpaper's Preston mentions the figure of 17 million in his article.

If Flacco is paid 17 million and the salary cap is 100 million, that means Flacco takes up 17 percent of the salary cap.
According to this 10.4M

Yeah neither did I. I was shocked to see Leach at over 4M. Ouch!!!$4M seems like a lot for a blocking back
So maybe the way the Ravens FO have screwed the pooch with the cap, they don't DESERVE to have a good QB. They just can't have it both ways. They chose to spend a TON of cap space on the defense, with the full knowledge that they needed to sign Joe in the not too distant future. But they did it anyway. Now they are in a bind. Oh well. They created this mess; let them figure out a way to deal with it. And if they can't, then Joe will just end up going elsewhere beyond 2013. (since I'm pretty sure they'll tag him if they can't get a contract worked out)
And let me get one thing crystal clear. I'm not talking about whether Joe is elite or perfect or Brady or Manning or Brees. What I'm talking about is this: Joe is better than anyone else that the Ravens can realistically get. Period. And if they DON'T lock him up, then they're screwed.
the salary cap for next year ougth to be about 121 million....
if the ravens do franchise Flacco, it will cost around 16 million since that is the average of the 5 highest paid QBs....frankly he's not worth that kind of money and I believe both sides know that.....
If they come to a deal it will be cap friendly for at next year with a signing bonus spread out over 5 years....I'll speculate a 5 years deal worth 75 million with 40 million guaranteed...base salary of 2 million in 2013 and 4 million 2014, 8 in 2015, 9 in 2016 and 12 in 2017 going up to 9 for the remaining three years....
yes that 10 million next year...but that much is coming off the books with Reed's release and other moves....place your bets....
Isnt Lewis signed thru next year? If a player retires and they still have a contract does the money still go against the cap?
Actually, that sounds pretty good IF Joe and his agent decide it's in his best interest to do so. If not, not.
(NOTE: The point being made by some posters isn't so much whether or not they can sign Joe and fit everything under the salary cap; it's that not much money will be left over AFTER that to fix some of the glaring holes on the O-line and defense. In THAT sense, they believe they can get a QB for a lot less money than Joe, but not a lot less quality (names being bandied about are Alex Smith, Matt Flynn, Cousins, etc.), fix more of the holes, and be ahead of the game.)

Given the Raven's history with QB's, and the fact that not much is out there, they will either have to come to terms with Flacco or franchise him. Smith is efficient and has gotten a raw deal in SF, but he isn't better than Flacco. Matt Flynn is untested, and Kirk Cousins isn't going anywhere because Washington needs him as a backup to RGIII who's style of play makes him injury prone. The Ravens have no choice because for the last two years they have accepted Tyrod Taylor as their backup. They have made no effort to bring in anyone that could realisticly take Flacco's place if he went down. Now that there is little help in the draft and in free agency, they really don't have a choice. Unless they simply want to tear it all down and start over. If so, good luck. They will likely not make the playoffs for the next two years or maybe more.
Steve Bisciotti didn't become wealthy by being stupid so he's not going to just let Flacco go without thoroughly examining all his options and right now, there aren't many. So, they'll franchise him and wait until 2014 to decide what to do with him. Next year will obviously be a pivital one for Flacco here in Baltimore. It would be nice to finally assemble a quality, pass protecting offensive line that will give him the opportunity to utilize the talents he has instead of suppressing them and attempting to make him into something he's not. Only then, will the Ravens get an accurate assessment of Joe Flacco and what he can potentially give this team long term. Up to now, who knows how good he can be? If everything remains status quo, my guess is he'll be gone in two years and they'll have someone else in place. Such is life for an NFL quarterback.
