I have to assume that these restrictions are done in the interest of safety for military members and their families.

These are interesting rules and regulations concerning firearms for military members, considering that:

GIs are well trained in firearms.
    GIs are drug tested.
    GIs are background checked.
GIs are mentally tested prior to entry.
GIS are subject to very strict code of code.

You think wrong on that one, I've lived in housing (1980's) maybe it's changed but weapons were outlawed in the BARRACKS but not housing.

So this 12 year old--a "bona fide kid", running the high probability of being raped and/or killed, not having access to that gun is a better thing?

That is a crass, crude ,and contemptible statement based on what Mom49of4 posted. You have no class at all and IMO owe her a direct apology for that remark.

Actually, I think the girl here did the right thing. The problem is, kids with access to guns are much more likely to hurt themselves or innocent people than intruders. MUCH more likely.

In this instance she called mom and was given permission - that is key!!!

Which clearly shows she also had time to escape....

    Kid good.

    Mom bad.

Irresponsible mom for leaving a loaded gun that was accessible to a 12 year old. Too bad you can't see that.
