The threat by Iran to close the straits would be in response to an attack by Israel and/or the U.S.

The irresponsible Netanyahu is the one pushing for a war that will involve America.

We're another step farther away form starting another stupid war in the Middle East.

I'm glad to see Obama standing up for America when our interests conflict with Israel's.

Log Cabin Republicans say they oppose Hagel because he's anti-gay. The American Family Association says they oppose Hagel because he's pro-gay.

    As one commenter noted:

I can think if no stronger endorsement than to have both the LCR & the AFA against you.

Hagel, an evolved Republican and twice wounded in combat veteran who actually volunteered to serve his country in both war and in Congress, is the right person at the right time to lead the Defense Department through the fiscal crisis and reasonably, responsibly out of Afghanistan.

Sometimes the most obvious truth can be presented simply, like this.

As Chuck Hagel rightly says, I am an American Senator not an Israeli Senator and as he told George Bush and Dick Cheney when it comes to unnecessary war and sending young Americans to foreign lands to fight and die I make my decision not as a Republican or a Democrat, I make those decisions as an American.

What is there not to like and support?

That's easy, he's Obama's choice. It matters not if it is a good choice for America, it matters only that he was selected by Obama.

It is a sad state of affairs in Washington if that is the only reason to oppose the nomination. Even sadder is that it would be the exact same thing if the roles were reversed.

Hussein no longer cares about pandering to gays, Jews, or anyone. He got re-elected. Now he'll just do what he wants and flip off anyone who disagrees with him.

Ask Hagel if he is opposed to sending troops into Africa. If he says yes then I say appoint him immediately.

Why are you against American troops in Africa? There are less than 5000 American troops in Africa which consists of 54 different countries. All troops currently stationed in Africa are there at the request of the host Nation, approved by the host Nation and are addressing shared security interests.

There were ONLY 16k American troops Vietnam in 63 when Johnson took office. Look where that ended. What are the shared security interests the US has with these African countries?

Hagel will probably get confirmed with between 60 and 75 senate votes. That's a pretty bi-partisan endorsement.

It reeks of Vietnam all over again. Why are you so for it? South Vietnam wanted America in as well. Did that mean we did the right thing? Or is Africa only the right thing because of it's vast resources?

And because Africa has many more resources than Vietnam it is a more volatile situation for a huge war with China, Russia and terrorist groups.

Troops in Africa help keep the empire strong and the money rolling in for the MIC.

I believe I was the first one to mention the US is sending in an army brigade early this year to support 35 nations in Africa in fighting terrorist. We haven't completed the job in Afghanistan yet we are now going into Africa.

Hagel was opposed to going into Iraq and Afghanistan Now the US is going into Africa. Why would Hagel support that move? More importantly, why would democrats support it?

Africa is the fastest growing continent in the world plus it is the continent with the most undeveloped natural resources. With the United States being the Worlds lone military superpower it is in our interest and the interest of Africa that all 54 countries in Africa develop in as orderly and peaceful manner as possible.

It is very positive, for trade (both ways) and for stability in the region that the United States is "the security partner of choice" for Africa especially when it advances the security interest of the United States while at the same time, together addressing what are clearly shared security interests both in stability and development.

Much better, in my view that the United States be the security partner of choice than China and/or Russia (who would like to be) for what I think are pretty obvious reasons.
