Thanks. I think coaches often employ the challenge too quick-- granted, the decision to use or not has to be made very quickly, but most of them seem to use it whenever a call looks wrong to them, regardless of the game situation. I think they should try to weigh in lots of factors, mainly game situation- such as--- is it worth it, how much will you gain? Even if you win, you might win the battle but lose the war, if you use up your challenges on less critical situations, then don't have any left late in the game when a crucial one might come up.

The coach tells him, and the ref should do an about face and go straight to the review booth not saying anything more to the coach, even if the coach has questions about the play.

In this scenairo, we would surely find who the dumbest coaches are in the league!
I agree, if they throw out the flag and its a reviewable call, they should get the challenge, regardless. If its not reviewable, then they should get a penalty.

This would fall under the "be careful what you ask for" category.

But I didn't agree that the coach who threw it out too hastily shoul dhave been denied the review--- his throwing the red flag did not affect the game in any way ( except for his being denied the review, any way) as they would have reviewed it had he not trown the red flag.

The refs don't tell the coaches when to use their timeouts (though they get a penalty for back-to-back TO's), why should they tell them when to use the red flag? They get 2 challenges per game (3 if none unsuccessful), let them throw the red flag whenever they want, reviewable or non-reviewable. It would probably speed up the game anyway. That's a rule that needs changed. All this time wasting standing around trying to figure out whether something is reviewable or not.
