I disagree. There have been few Raven players as beloved as Todd Heap. I remember the columnists, fans and forums exploding when the Ravens cut Heap, Mason & Gregg two years ago. All the usual suspects prophesized DOOM because our front office "did not know what they were doing." Now - not a word. Mason - retired after bouncing between two teams. Heap - often injured and released by the Cardinals. Gregg is out of the NFL now as well (I believe).
This front office and coaching staff handle salary cap parameters pretty well, and have a solid track record on player personnel. There have been very few veterans they have let go that went on to have All-Pro years after they left. Heap was one of my favorite Ravens, he will be in the Ring of Honor, but they let him go at the right time. In today’s salary cap NFL you cannot be sentimental. The Patriots are a great example of another organization that does not factor sentimentality into personnel decisions. There will be some hard cuts every year on every team. It happens. Ed is probably my ALL-TIME favorite Raven, but put me in the "Reed only at the right price" camp.
Yes, he's played in every game and he's been hurt in every game. Or so goes the story. That's the usual explanation for his laughable tackling. He's been dancing and diddling with so many receivers and running backs this year, I was seriously beginning to wonder if he was auditioning for "Dancing with the Stars." And it wasn't much different last year either. If he can't tackle because of injuries, he shouldn't be on the field. One big hit every 3 or 4 weeks means nothing, other than getting fined again. But hey, he's Ed Reed and he's untouchable so he's out there every week. Hopefully, after the post season, we've seen the last of this routine.
Ya don't see him of being any value for any money. Hmm. Let's look at facts and data:
Let's also compare Ed's play at the Free Safety position to other Free Safeties.
So far this year: 49 tackles, 9 assists, 20 passes defensed.
* Find a Free Safety with more passes defensed. There isn't one.
* You say Ed can't tackle? Well, he has 49 solo tackles. There are 8 Free Safeties in the league with more tackles. Know what? There are 23 Free Safeties with fewer tackles.
* Ed Reed has 4 interceptions this year so far. I count TWO Free safeties in the league with > than 4 picks.
Summary: Ya don't know what you are talking about. Again. Do some homework before spouting off.
Even in a down year, Ed's stats are among the best in the league at his position. Those are facts. It isn't agenda based or opinion based.
So - yes he should likely be retained at the right price. He still has value if things like facts and data mean anything (sorry for the inconvenience). Would I break the bank to sign Ed? No - we don't have enough $$ to go around. Is Ed still playing pretty well? Yes, he is.

Nostalgia a wonderful thing especially this time of year. But FB is a business. It is obvious to anyone being objective that Lewis and Reed's best days are long behind them. Not their fault Father time catches up with every athlete. Time to move on from them.
So - we're going to ignore facts? Kinda like we ignore facts and stats when it comes to Joe Flacco? So - we're all supposed to believe Ed stinks because.....you say so?
I think my evaluation is fact based and free of emotion. The numbers are what they are. His 4 picks didn't happen in your world? 20 passes defensed isn't real? Sorry dude.
But you'll break the bank on Joe who has had 1 good game in the past 5. 1 good game.
James: Listen, I readily admit that Ed's best days are well behind him. Yet, he has made 49 solo tackles ranking him #9 among Free Safeties. He has 4 picks - ranking him 3rd among Free Safeties. He has 20 passes defensed ranking him with the most among Free Safeties.
So while I get the fact that Ed is going to need to be very cooperative in order to stay with us ($$), I don't think it's accurate to say his play has been horrible this year. We've just come to expect super-human performance every year and now when his stats are still among the best, we are disappointed.
Ed is still having a decent year despite the team's defensive struggles.
you bring him back under a cap friendly deal or he can take his talents elsewhere...
he's lost a step, doesn't tackle well enough anf his ability to stay healthy makes anything other than a cap friendly deal a very risky move....it's a risk the Ravens shiouldn't take....
the days of one all pro player staying with one team for their whole career is pretty slim...the Ed Reed of 2013 isn't going to be the Ed Reed we've grown accustomed to...
the bottom line is this team needs to get younger and build for the next 10 tears....
Free Safety
Definition: A defensive player who lines up the deepest in the secondary and defends the deep middle of the field against the pass.
Examples:
A free safety's primary responsibility is to defend the pass.

20 passes defensed this year. #1 in the league at Free Safety for that statistic. Tackling? A bit down this year ranked #9 among Free safeties. Off year? Yeah, for Ed Reed. Who you gonna replace him with? That is a familiar refrain we hear, isn't it?
Both Ray and Ed are far from their former elite, HoF selves. But I don't think either one is at a "shouldn't be in the league" level yet either. They both miss tackles that they used to make. They also both still have a knack for making the occasional big play that most younger players in their positions don't, because of their knowledge and experience. Ed's always been a risk taker and has always jumped more than a few routes. When he did it and got burned 6 years ago, he was undisciplined / uncoachable. When he does it now, he's old and done. He had a would-be INT knocked away by Corey Graham (?) the week before against DEN. If the Ravens have better options to replace them, so be it. I don't see anyone on the roster right now that warrants a starting spot ahead of them. If the money is reasonable, why wouldn't you bring either one back? Unless of course someone else shows they're an upgrade...
If he'll sign cheap(which I don't think he will), why not? He's a great ball hawk, and though his hitting has diminished, the league doesn't want people hitting anymore anyway.
But , as I said, he won't sign cheap. He'll either retire, or play for some lower tier team that needs to sell tickets for a year or two.
