A Pizza Hut driver in Glen Burnie was attacked by 5 men. He defended himself (and saved the money and pizzas) with a part of a tent pole. His reward? Pizza Hut demotes him.

Unbelievable. Scratch Pizza Hut off my list.
Interesting choice for a defensive weapon to carry around. He should probably consider upgrading to an aluminum baseball bat. Looks like it would be much easier to swing than that thing he was holding.
I doubt that a boycott would do much good in the long term since anyone who eats at those places regularly enough to put a hurting on their bottom line is probably not going to live much longer anyway.
AA County Police Press Release about the incident.

How does one get "demoted" from a Pizza delivery driver? Did he go from Driver 1st class to Driver 2nd Calss or something? No disrespect, but I thought as pecking order went, you couldn't get much lower than a food delivery driver. Not that its a demeaning job or isn't great for young folks and moonlighters or part-timers, but still
never mind, I see they consider kitchen staff lower- guess that is less money and no tips
was he carrying the tent pole around as a weapon, or did it just happen to be in the car for some other reason and he used it as a weapon of opportunity?
Maybe he's a camper or something and has the whole tent in his trunk? If not, he should have, or, as suggested, carry a baseball bat and glove, maybe throw in a pair of spike shoes for good measure. Then they couldn't say he was carrying a weapon.
Glad the police made arrests.
Saticon--
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing about the demotion.![]()

Ridiculous. I haven't eaten at one of these places in decades, but now have a reason to bad-mouth their policy.
Perhaps they can print signs reading "our drivers are not allowed to defend themselves".
I pointed out on the linked press release that the police reported 5 robberies and all 5 were commited by 14 black suspects and that gets deleted?
Why?
Why would that get deleted but spot72 agenda of posting every white crime in the state doesn't get deleted?
Speaking the truth about crime will not be tolerated.
The bottom line is that WHATEVER an employee does, Corporate looks upon their actions as a reflection upon the Company. You can Never take any chance doing something that might put the Company in a bad light.
Not much you can do about it unless the employee complaint is somehow actionable.
A case like this one is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" defend yourself. Its a sign of gutlessness for a company to punish such employees.
I would rather be alive and fired

They caught three of them, do you want to live in fantasy land like spot72 and pretend that they were 5 rich white kids from the suburbs jacking up this pizza driver?
Robbing the pizza guy is a ghetto thing to do, since every time i read about a pizza guy or cab driver gets robbed its by a black male suspect is it such a stretch to assume the 5 juvies that robbed this pizza hut driver were black?
