Default WaPo: A gallon of milk could cost $8 in 2013

These guys can't even agree to pass a simple Farm Bill?

Come Dec. 31, Washington’s inaction could push the country’s milk prices to as much as $6 to $8 per gallon unless Congress passes a farm bill renewing federal support for agriculture programs.

Here’s how that would happen: Without legislative action in the next five days, the government will have to revert to a 1949 dairy price subsidy that requires the Agriculture Department to buy milk at inflated prices. Much like the current fiscal cliff, the law was left on the books “as a poison pill to get Congress to pass a farm bill by scaring lawmakers with the prospect of higher support prices for milk and other agriculture products,” as Vincent Smith, a Montana State University professor, told the New York Times.

I will eat toast in the morning, rather than my normal bowl of cereal. I will not pay $8 for milk.

And to think the president just gave these idiots a raise.

Let it go. If that's what it costs without federal subsidies then so be it.

Thats not what it costs. The price would be artificially inflated due to some 60 year old law

If the price doubles, it could be a practical test of the chained-cpi. And No, I won't be buying any.

No one else will either. It would rot on the shelves. Politics aside, demand is still a player in prices, and while this BS would cause an increase, that increase won't likely exceed what the public will pay.

That said, your grandkids will probably pay 8$ a gallon.
