Murder is a very different type of crime than property-crimes or even robbery. It is fair to say that murder rate correlates to those other crimes, but they're different things, done by different people as far as statistics are concerned.
The demographics of murder victims is merely a data point that demostrates the opposite of the picture that many white-flighters on here are painting.
Yes it's a very specific crime, but with 80% of the suspects being already involved in the system, it's a no brainer that the thug killers are also committing lots of other crimes.
I'll give you that all quality of life crimes are not committed by folks that also kill, but at the same time I really doubt that the killers only commit murder and no other crimes.
I can only speak for myself, but I wouldn't take any comfort in the idea that "most" of the killings in my neighborhood are folks involved in the drug trade, so I should be OK...as if theres some sort of honor thing going on and that I'm safe if I'm not involved in their business.
If people are sort of regularly getting killed in my community, thats a real problem even if I'm not the one getting killed.
This is interesting (at least to me):
Motives:
Argument: 14 = Looked at someone the wrong way?
Arson: 1
Child abuse: 6
Dispute over money: 2
Domestic: 3
Drugs: 3 = So much for the theory that the majority of murders are drug related
Neighborhood (dispute?): 1
Retaliation: 3
Robbery: 10
Other: 10
Unknown: 163 = No one is talking.
Just think how many more we would have if Baltimore did not lead the nation in undetermined deaths.
60% of the gun-related homicides were execution style head shots.
So one could argue that a significant number of the homicides last year were gang/drug related
"For the year, more than 60 percent of those who died in shootings were shot in the head, which experts say points to a high number of execution-style killings. That's the highest percentage in 10 years' worth of Police Department data."

Just think of how much lower the homicide numbers would be if the gangs declared a truce...
