Default We got a free phone!

Got a phone in the mailbox today, addressed to my wife. It came from True Wireless, a company that deals in those free phones for poor people.

She called them, asking why, and who sent it in her name. They can't give that info out unless you give them all sorts of personal info, LOL!

The phone is a cheapie, and I think they send them out, counting on fools to activate it by following the directions and it's only $5 for a billion minutes or some such crap. They are a scam, we looked them up on Google.

The phone, likely paid for with tax dollars or sleazy fees hidden on your bill, went right in the trash.

The whole "free cell phone" thing is an absolute rip, IMO.

If you get one like we did, don't bother to try to find out why, just trash it.

Did it have an ObamaPhone(TM) logo on it? That would be hilarious.

No, and thats not the angle I was going for here. The uncool aspect of it was that someone, somewhere (Google Earth shows the original shipping point as a "Mr. Auto" parts warehouse in MN) got my wife's name and our address.

We don't qualify for a free "Obamaphone" and the phone could only be activated by signing on to a too good to be true plan. I think they are willing to take the chance that some folks will be pleasantly surprised by the phone and activate it.

There's no such thing as "free". Cell phones for the "poor" (those who live in the city with only one Mercedes) are paid for by everyone who actually owns a cell phone or land line via their monthly bill, called the "Federal Subscriber Line Charge".

I know it wasn't what you were trying to do, I just thought it would be funny. And a lot of people might go for it because of the recent discussions about it.

I don't have to pay that charge on my cell phone.

C'mon pepper, you don't have to put up a front for us. We'll still like you even though you're poor.

Provide some proof. Are you still scanning black neighbors looking for cars that you cannot afford?

Sure they are, they're just usually incredibly faulty ones.
