Do you not know that it has been a tradition to name a team after someone or something in order to honor that someone or something?

Growing up, the term "Indian" referred to people who lived in harmony with nature, fought with bravery and gave the US Cavalry everything they wanted!

Of course, the Decatur Staleys (named by, and after, AE Staley the founder) did not seem to offend anyone. That team also had no readily identifiable image.

When they were purchased and moved to Chicago, George Halas changed the name to the Bears because he wanted the team to stand for rough, tough, hard-hitting and never quit football.

Why would he do that pray tell?
Exactly. They were originally the Braves and then changed to Redskins to try and tie in with the Red Sox. It didn't work so they move to Washington.

The idea that a team would have a mascot that was meant to insult is just idiotic.

Just try visiting a Reservation and yell out "Hi Redskins!" and see how "honored" they feel.

But, I want to turn this discussion back to football, since this is a football message board.
Since we're talking about them, what time does Snyder's team play this weekend? I've searched all over the net, googled it, looked for info on nfl.com,tvguide.com, can't find anything. Can someone tell me when they play?

Feel free to ignore the surveys done, specifically the one by Annenberg.

That would be about the only place you'd find that info. 'Cause it didn't happen. I thnk you mean adistant relative to Bin Lade had donated to Harvard. So? Did you have a point?

When the Europeans came to the land now know as North America, they called the natives - savages - that way they were justified for slaughtering them without a thought of dignity. Just sayin'.

Your analogy is ludicrous. Of course that would have a negative reaction because of the context in which it was said and where you said it.

Should we also change the name of the KC Chiefs? And how about the Cleveland Indians? And maybe those folks over in the Vatican don't take too kindly to the Arizona Cardinals. Would you walk in the Vatican and yell out, "Hi Cardinals?"

It offends me every time I hear the Boston Celtics mentioned anywhere. I say, the least people could do is pronounce the word Celtic [kel-tik] correctly. That would be a good start.

Not ludicrous at all, it's offensive on a Reservation and elsewhere.

Sure, I'd walk into the Vatican and yell "Hi Cardinals". Calling someone a Cardinal isn't a racial slur, so that's a ludicrous analogy.

So you'd stroll on into the Vatican and yell out, "Hi Cardinals." A bit disrespectful don't you think?

Is Cardinals a racial slur? No. Were any of these priests born a Cardinal? No.
    It's a bogus comparison.
It's also unlikely that the College of Cardinals would be standing/walking around mingling with the tourist rabble, so it's an unlikely scenario. But I'd do it.

Not only is it a slur, it's a curse.

End of story (and thread, hopefully).

    wow...is this conversation still going?

I don't mean this thread, I mean this discussion. I was first aware of this topic in 1992.

imagine that...20 years, and counting, of talking about the same thing. I wonder how long they were debating this before I became aware of it.

can anyone possibly add anything new to the dialogue? I ask in earnest. is it possible there's some point that hasn't already been made countless times?

I'm sure 20 years from now it'll still be going on.

Perhaps but a better analogy is if you walked in and said "Hi Wops". Redskins is much more of a slur than Chiefs it seems to me.

or greaseball degos spaghetti benders .......

one could almost make the case that Chief's or warriors was a positive thing but red skin lol ......

like naming an NBA teams the N words, darkies or any other insensitive racial slur ........

maybe we should name some arizona teams the brownskins or wetbacks, etc ......

of course both of those groups have made out a lot better than the indians the past 100 years and have a lot more political clout .......

I didn't know that color has anything to do with understanding the concept.
That idea in and of itself is racist.
