The King had a standing army.

You don't think the fact that the King had a standing army and was abusing the citizens played a significant part in their thinking when they drafted the Bill of Rights?

As governments grow bigger and evolve into empires, they eventually rot from within. It's man's nature. Absolute power and such.

Of course that played a significant part in their thinking. Which is exactly why they didn't want the US to have a standing army, and thus is the main reason for the 2nd amendment.

And if the King had confiscated all their weapons, would the revolution have occured?

Evidently, it seems that I didn't understand your post if this is your smart arse response. Maybe you should be a little more concise concerning the conveyance of your message.

That's a ridiculous question, especially since I am not and have never been in favor of confiscation of all weapons. All I'm saying is that if you have some irrational fear of the government going all Nazi on us and want to be prepared then that's fine... have at it. Just don't try and tell me that's the reason behind the 2nd amendment because that's just nonsense.

If you don't get the difference between what you posted and my comment about the present day US government then what's really left to discuss?

Irrational fear of the government continually usurping our rights?

Given the history of man, it's not irrational to fear the government's ever growing power.

And the consitution does give congress the right to raise and support an army.
