Default Columbia teen mall arsonist sentenced to time served

The Columbia teen who pleaded guilty to setting two fires outside The Mall in Columbia in May was sentenced to time served, 248 days, in Howard County Circuit Court on Thursday, according to state's attorney spokesman Wayne Kirwan.

Richard Nathaniel Mojica, 18, of the 10000 block of Swift Stream Place, pleaded guilty on Nov. 18 to arson and malicious burning charges for setting a fire in a Dumpster outside Lord and Taylor on May 6 and for starting a fire at the Sears loading dock three days earlier.

Howard County Circuit Court Judge Richard Bernhardt sentenced Mojica to 10 years in prison with all but 248 days suspended.

Thankfully no one was injured. Where were the parents?

5-years probation for arson? Wow, you'd get more time for pizzing on the sidewalk.

When I was a young Fire Fighter attending college back in the 1970s, our class toured a Columbia office building under construction, to see it's fire protection system.

We were on the top floor and a fellow Fire Fighter pointed out the section 8 housing in view. It was almost identical to the housing that people had to pay for.

There was one exception that we noticed from our top floor view, the section 8 housing was clearly cluttered with trash and keep in general disorder.

Even back in the 70s, most people who received free section 8 housing, did not appreciate it.

Thanks for the proof. Price has gone up since the housing was "free" <read: courtesy of the working taxpayers> in Howard County - $28.00/month for a $1,600/month apt. What a gig...if you can get it. Especially if your SO has an "un-reported" good paying full-time job.
