You'd first need to get your Comp TIA A+ certification. That consists of two exams, which are mainly basic computer knowledge and entry level hardware, software, and networking concepts and troubleshooting. Sort of the stuff you seem to already have some knowledge of. That certification can actually get you working in the field. You can actaully prepare for that by either taking a course at many community colleges who offer it or I've known some people who have just ordered study guides and basically prepared themselves for the exams. It's been a minute since I took my A+ exams but I believe at the time they were about $150 apiece.
The MCSE(microsoft) certifications, CCNA(Cisco), MASE(HP), certifications, etc aren't really required but look good on a resume. The costs for those courses vary and you also have to pay for those exams as well. I actually had a classmate at UMBC who got his A+ certification and ended up opening up his own computer repair shop and is doing incredibly well. I wish I had that kind of ambition
