Default Those Bums Who Brought You The Volt are at it Again

They were the darkest of days, all the more so in the design studios at General Motors where a small team had been assembled and given the less than humble task of building the world’s best sports car....

....But on Sunday night, at a well-attended ceremony at an old warehouse in a run-down section of Detroit, Juechter and Peters will get the honor of pulling the wraps off a 2014 Chevy Corvette that is already being hailed as the best American sports car of the past half century, perhaps the best ever.

And as the car that has always served as a showcase of GM’s capabilities, the new ‘Vette could put a much-needed halo around a company whose critics still tend to dismiss it as “Government Motors.”....

I wonder if this car will get the same reception as the Volt did among the "This is America, love it or leave it" crowd?

That looks pretty awesome. And I'm sure it will get terrible gas mileage, so people can't say that Obama ordered them to make it.

I would be much more likely to own a volt.

I've never been a big fan of the Corvette's looks... ever since around 1968, that is... but this design is quite pleasing to the eye.

As for the Volt, it's not much to look at, but the concept of a plug-in electric with a back-up gas-powered generator seems to be a prototype for what most cars will be in the future.

    Congrats to Chevy!

It would be nice if GM would actually repay the money it received from taxpayers ......and the government could actually sell the GM stock for an amount equal to what was invested....instead of at a huge loss.

Design looks great, but this worries me:

The new design features an 8-inch reconfigurable display that can rapidly be shifted to read out critical data in the mode a driver wants. There’s a second large screen for operating infotainment
Exactly what I'm looking for in a sports car.

Oh Lord, hope my husband doesn't see this. He's developing an interest in hot sports cars in his old age. (Well guess if it's that or an interest in hot young women, I shouldn't complain!)

Don't worry, in my experience, most 'vette drivers average about 5-10 miles under the speed limit. They may go five over if they start feeling a bit "frisky."

What do you think the chances are of Iraq repaying the United States for the Bush war and delivering the people from Saddam Hussein?

    Love it.
If it drives like it looks, and I had the money, I'd buy one.

I also like the Volt concept and execution. Too bad it's so expensive and apparently the batteries will now be owned by a Chinese company.

That money isn't important because it didn't help Americans.

"Pricing won't be announced until close to launch, later this year but, hints Juechter, "Our business case was based on the idea if you can afford the current Corvette you can afford this one."

Well, I can't afford the current one so...

Iraq didn't ask us into their country. But they also should not have played games with the UN or the world by making everyone believe they had WMD.

    Boring.

The problem is that his car is trying work the huge but rarefied expanse between high-end-sports-car and super-car. That market is particularly fickle, its customers obviously aren't cost sensitive but they are value-sensitive. A sour review or two could easily sink its chances of success.

The competition will be far more refined cars ranging from well-appointed Porsche 911's to Audi R8 to various BMW and Mercedes models.

Well, if you're going to buy an SUV and money is no object... that is a better choice than a dowdy Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator.

I would have figured Mitt to be more of a Land Rover guy when he isn't being driven around in the back of town-car.
